Customs charges on tires
« on: August 19, 2005, 02:13:06 pm »
Hi,

Can anyone who has ordered tires from the US tell me what customs / other charges to expect?

Any likely problems / things to be aware of at the border?

I'm only 30mins from the border, so would plan to drive to the UPS store in Ogdensburg (NY) to pick up the tires. As it's so close, I won't be staying overnight so won't have any duty free allowance I can claim.

If I fill the car with gas when I'm there, I'll probably save enough to pay for the cost of the trip ... plus it looks as if shipping is $50 cheaper to the US rather than Canada.

Thanks,
Paul

Just a question....what happens if one of your new U.S. bought tires has a warranty problem?  Do you have to take it back across the border to where you bought them?

Is can_saab talking about tirerack? I have same questions here.

for 84im, from my talks with tirerack guys, you do NOT have to take tires back to USA, the bad part, however, is they don't provide road hazard warranty to canadian customers, at least not tirerack. if you know where does, let me know please :-)

I presume from your post that you are going to declare the tires?  perhaps duty and definitely GST. No PST

I note from TR that you can get a list of installers for a city easily... use the generic city zipcode for Ogdensburg on the TR site...maybe you can have the tires shipped direct to save humping them in the car between UPS and back here.

My guess is that the import taxes will make the price pretty close to Cdn. prices with exchange and all.

actually in my case the total is 211.20, all inclusive (55.20 fedex ground shipping), for 4 195/60/15 Kumho HP4 716 87H tires. what's the cheapest on these 4 tires here in canada?

if I buy from tiretrends, the shipping is 44, and tax is 7% (GST).

Tax is dependent on which province you reside. If you have PST you will be required to pay when you clear your tires through customs. You will also typically pay a duty rate of 7% as well. Warranty is really up to the manufacturer. Most tires are distributed in Canada through a completely seperate company from that in the US. I would suggest contacting the Canadian Head office of the particuler brand. You might be surprised to find that they will not honour the warranty if it is bought from outside of Canada.

Thanks for the info and replies. My question was more motivated by selection than price. I would have bought winter rims and tires from Tirerack so would have to have declared them as it would be very obvious.

However, I've since heard from Tiretrends that they expect to have more tires in stock in the next couple of weeks so it may be a moot point in any case.

Cheers....
