Accord or Altima, I need to decide real soon

Know what Artic, I took quite a bit of time to look through those threads.  Here is a bunch of backyard mechanics doing mods!  One guy talks about putting back in the stock intake before going back to the dealer!! When I was in the business I like many other service managers would just cringe when these people would walk in with a problem.  Have you seen the list of gizmos added to these cars!  A lot of these people deserve some of the problems they get and you can't take for cash what they write, sorry.  We have seen a few problems here on CD and from time to time we see problems with any brand/model.

Okay, so I went to a dealership with my friend this afternoon.  There's a salesman standing outside and before we even got close to the door he was starting us up with 'How are you, gentlemen?'.

The salesman primed us up by saying LX-G coupe has been selling like hotcakes and if we wait more days they'll be impossible to find.  I raised an eyebrow.  I think he sensed somehow that he has a tougher nut to crack.  Anyways, he said he doesn't have a coupe on the lot but took us into his LX-G sedan.  He tried to explain the features to me, but I didn't let him finish, I told him I already did the research work.  He told me the only difference between the LX-G and EX-L are the leather seat, alloy wheels and moonroof.  I told him about the other differences.  Long story short, I saw in his eyes that he was convinced that I knew what I was looking for.

He asked me if I will be leasing or purchasing.  I said I'm purchasing.  He asked me how I will finance the purchase, I said that is my problem and that I am paying him in cash.  He asked me, sort of trying to convince me, about the low APR and that I should consider it.  I said, no thanks, I pay the way I want to pay.

In a nutshell, I took command of the whole conversation.  I told him my time is important, I have no interest in trading bs and all I wanted to know is the on-the-road price.  He said, I can get a good deal because they have this promo.  I said, I know all about the checkered flag event.  He then dropped the bomb, LX-G+automatic, no other options or accessories, $33,000.  I said the conversation was going to be short, that the number in my mind was far from what he gave.  He asked, what was on my mind.  I asked, what's the breakdown of the 33K.  He said, it was a good deal because there is $1,350 credit and... he was about to say some more, I interrupted him.  I told him I know about the Honda credit on the coupe and I know the dealer invoice.  He started blabbing around and around and I let him, then ultimately, he must have noticed that I was quietly just looking at him in the eye, he said "about $30K".  I countered, "'about' is an indefinite word, did you mean 30999 or 30001?".  He said $30K plus a couple of hundreds.  I said, "Look, I am pressed with time I gotta go back to work.  It was nice talking to you."  He said, for me to get the final figure I have to commit if I am really buying.  In the end, we went inside, he wanted to give me a brochure, but I said I have one at home with contents I have memorized.  Told him I'll be back so he better crack on his calculator because I only have 20 minutes on Wednesday when I meet him.  I am going to call him on Tuesday to ask him about his final price on the phone.
So, my cyber-friends, am I doing this right?  Can I just give my limit of "$28,300.00" take it or leave it?

Not bad if that's the car you like.  You've done the research, got some feedback from "hondasalesguy" so you know what the ballpark is.  Personally I don't know if I'd want to deal with someone who never gives a straight answer, but i see nothing wrong with telling him your number is $28,300.00 because you've already got a decent deal on the Altima lined up.

If he keeps trying to avoid giving straight answers, personally i'd either walk or just tell him (the salesman) to get someone who can answer your questions.  I have no use for the crap.

If you are giving the ultimatim, you must be prepared to walk away if your demands are not met. Are you prepared to do that? If not, I might not be quite so eager to "corner" the guy. Up to you how you do it.

Your price of $28,300 allows him for a $400 gross on the car. Since nobody I knows of sells a whole pile of LX-G Coupes (probably the black rocker panels and 15" wheels with plastic covers are what make the car not so popular)I bet he takes the deal. Don't ask for any throw ins after that, if you want to be taken at your word you can't commit to that number for a bone stock car and then ask for more. Same as you wouldn't put up with him agreeing to a price and then asking YOU for more...

On the LX-G Sedan the 15" wheels with plastic covers look halfways decent, but on the Coupe they seem to look a bit small and out of place... the lack of body side mouldings makes the whole side of the car look a bit slab sided and calls attention to the Black rocker panels, especially on a Silver car. So if you buy the car cheap enough, by next Spring you should get some nice rims which change the look of the car a lot. Also if you go with the Black exterior paint colour the rocker panels will blend in just fine...

If I will consider a Hyundai, it will be the Tucson.  I'm not looking for an SUV, though.
I've just been in my friend's Accent this afternoon.  The plastic used in the interior looked like the same material used in $3 garbage bucket from Wal-Mart.  I hope not all Hyundais are like that.

Friends of mine have an 05 Santa Fe and unfortunately the interior looks the same as what you described.

The interior material quality in a typical Hyundai can't touch that of the better Japanese cars. They (Hyundai)have made some big strides but still have a ways to go before they are on an even playing field with Honda and Toyota.

I'd have to say the presentation or first impression of a Hyundai panel is not bad.  But it's when you start examining closely that you see the differences.  Let's remember one thing, a lot of people don't see anything past the first impressions so it doesn't matter.  My 1st impression of an 02 Altima was "brutal", others liked it.  The 05 Altima IMO is day and night. An Accent interior brand new is not bad, but after 3 years it's a different story, certainly people can't expect more than that as it's not the purpose of that car.

Nissan's interiors have improved too, but even in the Infiniti line the only real shortcoming of the car is their interior fit and finish. I looked at a G35 Coupe a couple years back and the plastic was cheap ass looking... it didn't look like a $45K car from the driver's seat...

Just remember to get what you like.  Everyone here is by and large just giving their oppinions.  And they're valid...for them.
