Alternatives for 195/60/15 tires?
« on: August 17, 2005, 09:35:14 am »
I'm about to change the tires on my old car.
some people telling me that tire in 195/60/15 is usually more expensive than 195/65/15 or 205/60/15. Called some guy in "tirerack" who said that 195/65, 205/60 are ok on Accord. but other sizes not ok. I then called some local shops, a guy at one local shop said that 65 is too high, will have problems when making turns, but 205/60 is ok.

I'm a dummy in car. what alternatives I could  have here, any other sizes? Any suggestions on cheap good all season tires? It seems doesn't make to much sense to me to put Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread on old car with 200K KM.
any good place to buy tires online in canada?

thanks in advance.

I would stick with the original size. 195/65/15 and 205/60/15 are very close to the same overall diameter and both are taller. You should be able to find some reasonably priced tires in the proper size. Here is a link to a bunch of options:

thanks, morty. called tiretrends, shipping kills the deal.

I have been asking around local shops, saw Canadian Tire's flyer yesterday they have "2nd tire 1/2 price" deal.

3 brands/models come in my size:

BFGoodrich Precept 87T, 83.24  (touring)

Dunlop SP Sport A2, not sure of rating, 99.36 (performance)

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Dunlop&tireModel=SP+Sport+A2htt p://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Dunlop&tireModel=SP+Sport+A2

however, the review is a bit lower than I expected

Dunlop(?) Motomaster(?) Predator GTS, 67.86,  87s (performance)

from the reviews, guess my only choice is sport A2 among those 3?

IMO, I would generally go with the oft mentioned best bang for the buck, Falken Ziex ZE-512. It is typically priced well and has very good reviews for a three season, performance tire including good wet handling.

FYI, Canadian Tire has TIRES on the back page of the flyer 50 weeks out of the year...  so if it's not an immediate concern, see what's offered in next week's flyer?  The "Buy One, Second Half Price" is a pretty common deal, but the brands will change.

I guess total price will depend on what is compared. Keep in mind that you may save the PST depending on where you are located. The CT specials are definitly a good value, but a lot of the time they are on their own brand of tires. Even the mentioned BFG Precept is a CT only tire.  FYI...buying from the States means...duty, brokerage and PST.
