Seems as though Toyota is finally putting a V6 in there after much critisisms of not having one and being "underpowered". Not to mention bigger in size.

Good God that thing looks like it was in smash up derby!  V6...hum...let's hope it's good on fuel with today's cost!  Was there not a much better, very different RAV4 posted here a while back?

If you read the article, it says that it will more than likely have a front end that resembles the tundra or tacoma. This article just demonstrates the gain in size as well as the added V6.

I hear the V6 will be an engine option only, ie. not in all RAV4s. As stated already, that mule in the pix is so cobbled together, the real thing will probably look much different. Pix I have seen out of Japan show a much nicer look.

Dammit! Why do they keep making them bigger and bigger. I personally really love the current one. It was peppy enough and good on gas... I'm very disappointed

We've already seen the effects of a 6 in the Tucson/Sportage making it a few 100 lbs heavier and hence thirstier.

He he....
I am glad I went for the '05 with the 2.9% financing and the 5 years debugging....
If I had wanted something bigger and a V6, I would have gone for a Highlander...
Are they "vampirizing" themselves as they don't think there is a market for a small "premium" SUV?
I don't get car manufacturers sometimes...

Well I think it's a good move by Toyota to increase the size of the RAV4 a bit... it just isn't competitive in terms of interior space with the CR-V, X-Trail, Tucson, Tribute, etc. They really are alone in the small small-SUV market and many people turn their backs to the RAV4 just for of that reason. So for the size increase, I'm all for it.

As for the 3.0L V6 engine @ 230hp, well I think it's too big for a small-SUV... too big, and too fuel consumming. Hyundai has it right with its small 2.7L V6 IMO... it just isn't very good on fuel. Toyota (same for Honda, Nissan, etc. ) needs to develop a small V6 engine that will still provide great fuel economy (for a V6 engine...) while offering a lot of torque at low RPM... That's what those small-SUVs need... small V6 with good fuel economy.

I doubt that Toyota would go to 230hp V6 in the RAV as the current Highlander, with the 3.3L V6, has 230hp. The RAV will, as far as I am told, grow only a bit but not to become HL size. All speculation should end this Fall, as it is supposed to be out then.

I have to disagree here, keep improving the 4's as they have been for the past few years.  In the AJAC test results the X-Trail with a 2.5 is faster than the Tucson 2.7. No, no I don't want to start something here, relax they are just numbers to prove my point.

Smain, off the line speed isn't everything. It's the 80-120kph numbers that are the most useful in my opinion. And personally, I like my vehicles to achieve their maximum torque at a low RPM number... I'm a bit tired of engines screaming at 5-6000rpm just because you want to overtake someone on the highway at 120 or 130kph.

Thanks for the five Av!

Even though I don't like it, I saw it coming... I mean, all car companies are making their "compact" suv's bigger and bigger until it's pretty hard to call them compact. Remember that commercial with the dude driving his Rav under a fallen tree while this other guy in a bigger SUV stares at him in amazement? That was great! Can't do that anymore...

I really liked our 2002 Rav4 before it got in an accident. It was big enough. Was fun to drive while hauling all my crap... *sniff*...

In any case, I might just be overreacting over the spy shots... I'll see it when it comes out, but I'm missing the current generation Rav already.

Here I go again, 80-120 the X-trail still leads.  I can also attest and I'm sure others too, there is  no screaming from 80-120. (Warning, not a pissing contest, just trying to validate:-))

Fair enough Smain. But load up both vehicles with 4-5 adults and with a few hundred pounds of cargo... we'll see which engine will get you up that hill with less efforts...

The bigger 4-cylinder engines from Honda, Toyota and Nissan are pretty good in terms of producing torque at a low enough RPM, but they still can't compete with a small V6.

Well, on my last trip in the mountains(Gatineau's not the rockies)with 4 passengers and loaded with gear I got 31 mpg.  I rarely exceeded 100kph, so what can I say....

Shnak, the day you need to haul 5 people and all their crap, you can go to budget or Hertz and rent a freaking Minivan!
No need to go around with a bigger V6 all year long, especially with the 3$/liter gasoline you are preaching...
What Toyota should do is import the bloody Diesel RAV4 here! (and a diesel EH and crayolla... I am repeating myself!)

Froggy, I am sure that if Honda, Toyota or Nissan put their heads to it, they could develop a small 2.6-2.8L V6 engine that would have more torque than their existing 4-cyl while still be more efficient than the 2.7L from Hyundai. Because to me, it would be the perfect engine to put in a small SUV... I know there's a big difference between the 2.0L that I had in my '99 CR-V and the 2.4L they use in the current CR-V, but I'm really not sure I would ever want to go again with a relatively big vehicle like that with a relatively small engine. I constantly felt like I was cheating death while attempting to take over cars on 1-lane roads in the country. Never again.

Agreed that for highway driving, a V6 would make me more comfortable. I'd be more comfortable, but not at all feel endangered for driving a 4 cylinder. But driving in the city, with fuel that way it is these days, I would rarely be able to justify the V6.

Once we get cleaner Diesel fuel in Canada, companies will start bringing their diesels over here. I'm personally quite interested in the Honda Diesels that are apparantly so nice over in Europe. Doubt that we'll see them for a while though...

I drove the '04 RAV4 from Kelowna to Victoria and back last Christmas time with 3 adults plus a full load of luggage and had no problems with problems with power on the Coquilhala with the 2.4L 4 cylinder. IMO, the existing RAV size is adequetely powered with the 2.4L, although the previous 2.0L was too weak. The RAV V6 will be an optional engine, so the 2.4L should still be available. Nothing wrong with having the choice.
