Winters for the 6-Wagon
« on: August 15, 2005, 04:23:36 pm »
All of this talk this week about winter tires and stock availability has got me thinking and my wallet shivering or is that shrinkage.

So I used our good friend's TT's website and came up with many options.  One of the hits looks to be a great deal, the Hancook Icebear W300 in the 205/60/16 size (My summers are 215/50/17).
See pdf with big picture here --> http://www.hankooktireusa.com/pdf/uploads/W300.pdf

Has anybody here or Morty have any opinions on these?  On the P5 I did 3 winters on some C.Tire Nordic IceTracs (4 tires for $200 w/taxes) and survived but didn't like their 'plush' ride on the highways.

Most of our driving is highway with trips to London to visit family or Kolopore (Collingwood area) to snowshoe/hike and maybe a trip to somewhere in Quebec for a mini-vacation.  If its snowing that bad in Toronto and the army needs to be called we can always walk to get food to avoid all of the idiots on the roads.

I too am looking for some winter tires (^^see the three winters above^^).

The other tire that looks good is the Kumho KW17.  It's H rated which is close to the V of the OEMs.  My only concern with them is that they don't seem meet the severe snow tire standard as listed here:
http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/topics/winter/wtirlise.htm

EDIT: Hmmm, they don't seem to be available in the size you're looking for.

Quad - my tire shop friend says the Hancook Icebear W300 is a good winter tire, but, for me, it only comes in my size in Q rating and I wanted a bit higher speed rating than that. Hancooks are usually a bit cheaper to buy than some of the other brands (kind of like the Hyundai of tires!!).

I bought them (same size) last Fall for my Subaru Forrester, bottom line is would buy them again. Great tire for the price, as advertised on snow and not bad at all on dry.

Tortoise, I think that Transport Canada list you found is very outdated.  I wouldn't worry about it not showing up there, just make sure by going to the tire manufacturer's website and look for the mountain/snowflake logo.

Thanks for the feedback.

If Morty is reading or if anybody else knows.

Why does TT's put a freight on each tire and each rim when they would be mounted pre-shipping making it only one item not two?
Or is this like Ikea and I get to put it together after I open the boxes?

I am very slow this week. Had a Baby Girl and a little bit distracted...will pull my socks up.

The W300 has been a great tire for many of our customers. We have done a crazy amount of packages with the W300 for the Mazdas and have a lot of satisfied customers. This tire has exhibit good snow, wet and wear characteristics. Also, comes in a H or V-speed rating, which offers better handling in high-speed and dry pavement conditions. Bang for the buck it is a good option.

Other tires to consider in an H-rating would be: Dunlop Sport M3, Michelin PA2 and Pirelli Winter 210.

Glad to hear you have checked out the web site. We are doing some upgrades at the end of month. So, expect a new look soon.

As for shipping; we break the shipping down per piece in our system. We do mount and balance everything before we ship out. We are also introducing free Road Force balancing on all winter packages for the 2005 winter season.

Thanks Morty and congrats to you and your family.

I checked your site and the Dunlops didn’t come in my size, actually you only have two sizes listed.  Would you have a price for them in 205/60/16 if they are available?

Thanks for the congrats....It is pretty awesome.

I forgot...we have some stuff turned off because it is still off-season. The Dunlops will be available and look for pricing info in the next week or less.

Price is going to be somewhere in the mid $140's...will know better soon.

Congrats from me too Morty - that's awesome!  As the father of two young girls (1 yr & 3.5 yrs) all I can say is - now you're outnumbered!! (me, hopelessly so, even the cat is a female)

Oh, as for the tires, the other option is Yoko V901, also H rated.  I'd love to compare directly to the Hankook W300's though, as I'd bet they are not as different as their price spread. I really considered these also, when I bought last year.

Thanks everyone....even got Saf...impressive . A little out numbered, but some times you do your best when you are the underdog. No tire names...couldnt do that to the poor girl. It is bad enough I come home smelling like one every day.

Back to tires...the V901 is very similar to the W300. Is there more value in the V901 to justify the difference, I couldnt say. Goes back to what you think. Is it worth more money to you to get the more recognized name brand.? If so, I would say buy the Yoko. If not the W300 is a very good winter tire.
