Consumer Reports fails it in its Rollover Resistance rating, which isn't based on "real life" testing but rather on a mathematical formula.

Last TV season one of those "Dateline" or "Primetime" evening news shows did its own "real-life" test and found the vehicle to be tippy, the outside wheel easily loses contact with the road when executing any accident avoidance manouver.

That may be why they depreciate so much and I see very few of them on the road.

Not a very popular choice around here. There may be better options if this is the kind of vehicle you need. Honda Ridgeline for one, or Chev. Avalanche for another.
2011 BMW X3 35i Vermillion Red, MSport
and
2012 Toyota Camry SE V6 in Alpine White

You need to list the things you are looking for in a vehicle, Could. Things like what do use the vehicle for (hauling, towing or just driving), how many ppl do you wish to carry, do you need a truck or truck-like hauling capacity, how much do you want to spend all in, is fuel economy important, is reliability or style more important (not mutually exclusive), etc.

Hard for us to comment when we don't know what you wish to achieve. OK?

Could - for yourself and your grub bags, IMO the SportTrac is way overkill. I suspect you would tire of the rough ride, low power, high depreciation and plain bulkiness of it long before you get it paid off. Speaking only of my preferences, if you want the "truck-like" higher seating and AWD, try some of the smaller crossovers like a CRV, RAV4, Forester or even Vibe/Matrix. Or check out a sports wagon like a Subaru GT, Volvo V50. If you want something really funky, wait for the new Toyota FJ Cruiser. If you want Ford only, the Escape would be better than the SportTrac IMO. You have tons of choices, shop around a bit. The "Hat" has lots of dealers to chose from. Good luck.

What's your price range, Could? Ovr makes some good suggestions. From what you've told us, I don't think you really need a sport track. Or a truck for that matter.

Chevy Equinox is a car-based SUV, but seems to offer some of what you're looking for.  It's also rated very high amongst "car pundits".  The CR-V's are nice as well.

IMO, you wouldn't even need an suv for that matter. But I would also second the compact SUV market. Lots and lots to choose from there...

Agreed that it is overkill to be driving something that big for a couple of groceries. Wouldn't it be more fun to drive something that handles better but gives you that higher driving position?

John Oakley,on AM640 Toronto, owns a Sports Trac and raves about his vehicle.
I guess it's a matter of taste,preference,etc.

I also know a couple of Sport Trac owners who love their vehicles. If the exposed cargo box is useful to you, it really can't be substituted for a compact SUV. The ride is by no means plush, but the long wheelbase removes the suspension pitching that is common with short wheelbase compacts.

thanks so much everyone for all your inputs I really do appreciate them, I am seriously considering a 2003 CRV which is listed at 23788.00 and is fully loaded so I think thats not too bad a price but will know very soon it also has balance of warranty which is 5yr or 100,000 km it has 89851 on it now but still in love with the sport trac I know you guys think I'm a little insane but I just love the look and hi-way ride of them lol, take care all talk to you soon, Cheryl

Don't worry about we think on here, Could; but do your research on the vehicles you like. Don't buy on looks alone or you may be sorry. Take a demo SportTrac for an extended drive (overnight if possible) in the city and hiway and see if you really like it. If so, then get it.
