2003 Acura 1.7 strut recall
« on: August 14, 2005, 11:02:07 am »
Hi I am new to board and have just purchased a 2003 Acura 1.7 EL premium edition from reputable dealer in city. Before I took vehicle for test drive they told me there is recall on front struts and it will looked after on tuesday. My wife kids and I fell in love with car and I bought it. I now noticed yesterday that steering wheel is cockeyed. Is this directly related to strut problem or is there a additional alignment problem with vehicle. Please any info would be greatly appreciated, as I am now worried sick that I have been taken.  Thank You all

The car probably just needs an alignment to fix that.  When they change the struts they should do an alignment, ask them to be certain.

And welcome to the forum!

Funny thing. Many years ago I had warranty work done on a Nissan. They did work under warranty twice front end for 2 different things within 10 months. They charged me for alignment each time as they said front end was apart to do work and alignment must be done.

I understand that but I argued that I would not need the alignment if it was not for the warranty work / defect. Lost argument but suspect it was just a cash grab on their part.

It like being charged to put your car back together to fix their defect.

I would get ready to argue the same.

can a car pass a safety with a alignment problem?  Trying to make sure dealer is not pulling fast one on me. When they took vehicle in on trade in, what are there obligations for putting it up for sale again? Am I paranoid or what? My wife thinks I am lol

In Ontario alignment is not part of the safety unless it is so out of alignment it is undriveable.

Don't understand you question really.  Dealer took your trade and they can do with as they please: send it to auction, sell it as is or sell it certified which is a very basic mechanical standard.

what I meant to say is the vehicle I bought was a trade in. I don't know the specs for a safety. Just trying to gain knowledge as to what should and should'nt be done when safetied by dealer. After strut work I hope  that vehicle will be fine Thanks

Safety is very very basic.  It does not really indicate how well a car is running.

OK, in your case not much will need to be done.  You certainly need an alignment though.  You might also need brake pads even though it passes a safety with the current ones because thin brake pads will warp those brake discs easily.  When they get to 30% it is best to chuck them. What's the mileage?

I now noticed yesterday that steering wheel is cockeyed.

I don't know what the problem with the struts are, although my mom's has developed a pretty good clunk up front and I suspect it is a strut.  To correct the steering wheel I would think the tie rods would need to be reset.  However, if they are replacing both struts then that is certainly the time to correct the steering wheel as the tie rods ends get popped.

Safety certificate is brakes, some front end parts but shocks are not part of it, lights, horn, good windshield, tires, etc.  Like James says it has nothing really to do with how good the vehicle runs.
