Importing a New Ford from USA...State Sales Tax??
« on: August 11, 2005, 11:48:53 am »
Hi,

I'm Interested in Importing a Ford Excursion from the USA into Ontario. I'm up to date on Fees at the Border and GST, however I'm uncertain as to whether I'd have to pay that States' Sales Tax upon Purchase? If so, is it Refundable once I Register it at the MTO? If not, am I Exempt from having to pay PST as I've already paid the Sales Tax in the State that I purchased it from?  Again, this is a New, as yet unregistered model and I'd hope to drive it home.
Any Help and or Comment is Greatly Appreciated!

Thanks,
}Dave.

With Ford Canada giving all those rebates right now, why go through the hassle of buying an Excursion in the Excited States?
You're gonna have to pay the PST anyhoo on registering  the SUV on this side.

You will pay tax in ontario not the US sales tax.  I would make sure warranty carries over first as well.

Even with Ford Canada's Family Plan the same Vehicle in the USA, under it's Family Plan, is $8000 to $9000CAN cheaper. Yes, Even after Dollar Conversion at the Royal Bank.
Only problem is that, as Canadians' we aren't elligible for the Family Plan in the US. Oh well!!
Also, some States, like Florida and Indiana reqire the Payment of State Sales Tax if you intend on driving the Vehicle home to Canada. Importation via a Vehicle Carrier avoids State Taxes. States such as Texas, Nebraska, Wisconsin and NY follow the rule of Paying Taxes where you Register the Vehicle in Canada. They'll provide you a Temporary Permit to get the Vehicle over the Border.

You are certainly NOT exempt from PST when you register the vehicle in Ont.   I am not aware of ANY cross border deals like that.... they do that in the EEC but not here

No, You're quite Correct. There seemed to be a Grey Area when I first started Enquiring. As I made Reference to above, some States demand payment of Their Sales Tax, if you chose to drive the Vehicle home to Canada.
For Example, Texas does not and is probably why so many SUVs Listed on EBay, available to Canada, are from Texan Sellers.
