Meguiars 3 Step process
« on: August 11, 2005, 09:31:18 am »
Yesterday after work I started the Meguiars three step process on my car.  I had just finished applying step 1...... the heavens opened up!  Mother nature is relentless.  5 minutes later it was sunny.  Here I was with a towel trying to get the wax off.... It was brutal..... Smearing and everything.  Finally gave up and will try again today after work.

I'm impressed with the step 1 cleaner wax.  With my orbital buffer I was able to get out some fine clouding/scratches that a car wash put on.  I'll let you know how the rest turns out.

Canadian tire has on sale for 39.99 (Regularly 79.99) 4 inch random orbital cordless buffers.  I'm really impressied with it.  Comes with 2 batteries as well.  If you pick one up make sure you buy extra pads etc... it comes with enough to get you going but no terry poslishers.

Wetson, you should start over again, the rain got your car dirty again.

And those buffers aren't the greatest, once you see something like a porter cable in action you will understand.

JB is correct - a good polisher is worth it's weight in gold and time too. If you were to buy the right pad I'd let you use mine since we are not too far away from each other I think. I'm Guildwood.

I'm still not going to complain about it cause it's better than doing it by hand.

Porter-Cable makes excellent tools.  I agree.  But I'm not about to dole out a couple hundred bucks on something I'm only going to use once or twice a year.  Just not worth it.  If I had 4 or more cars then yeah... I'd pay the extra $$$ for one.

Meguiars is selling these porter Cable machines now with their own name on them with a very nice Polish Kit with them. They are charging $300. for the system but it does look like a very nice Tool Kit. I have 2 different ones now that do the job and will handle the work that I need done for now.

Exactly my thought too.  I'm an average user and it's not like I'm showing my car to the world or plan on keeping it for more than 4 years.  As long as it does the job satisfactorily to my requirements I don't care.  :-)

Wetson, how long does the battery last? (is that the simoniz portable polisher?) does it have enough juice to finish the job or do you need to use your backup battery?

Hey Crolly.  Yesterday was the firt time I used it.  I charged one of the batts for about 2 hours and it ran fine.... I didn't have the chance to drain it because it started pouring.  With a 2 hour charge outta 5 it ran strong.  I used it for about 20 minutes before being interupted.

After you finish your 3-step restoration process, I hope you could post your impressions on the whole 3-step experience and the degree of restoration you achieved.  It would be great if you could add your impressions on the performance of your new cordless polisher too.

Thanks Wetson

I also have 1 of the Simonize units and have been able to do the entire truck with it. There are times its better then the other 9" polisher I have because of the shapes on the tailgate and so forth. It fits in the indents better. You definitely need extra pads for sure.

I'm a fan of Meguiars too and usually load up on their stuff when I attend the car show in Carlisle, PA. This year, they were selling their newly packaged stuff from the big trailer in the showfield while last year's stuff was sold at bargain prices near the grandstand.

However, I still use the old terry cloth hand buffer to get a nice shine on my cars.

I was able to do the whole 3 step last night.  First off.  The simonize did all three steps on one battery.  Didn't have to use the back up. The process was relatively painless and I'm very impressed.

Step one is a cleaner wax that cleans fine swirls and oxidization.  It took out most of the fine scratches that a evil, rogue car wash left on the side of my vehicle.  The liquid is a little bit oily and took a little extra effort to get off but all in all it was pretty easy.

Step Two is the polish.  It went on well and came off just as easy.  It smells like coconuts.  Once again it had some sort of oil in it but it came off easier than step one.

Step Three is the Wax.  It went on like a charm and came off like a charm.  It smells good to.  Like bananas.

The over all finish on my car was like glass.  The paint has a really 'deep' and solid appearance.  The fine scratches from day to day driving are not visible.  I'm glad it's a once or twice a year thing cause my back and shoulder muscles are aching today.  Well worth the effort though.

All I have to do now is touch up the finish with their quick detailer as needed (I've used it before and it's sweet).  I recommend having a couple of terry towels or micro fibre cloths on hand to use with the buffer.   They worked well at getting the oily stuff off after step one.

Barrie, I find it interesting that your simoniz unit  can get into those nook and crannies.  Do you have a cordless as well?  Thanks for sharing your impressions.

Wetson, congratulations. Nicely done.  I'm surprised the battery lasted that long.  I assume you used the polisher in applying and removing #1, #2 & #3.  Thanks for sharing your impressions.  Now I'm tempted to do the 3-step process as well.  Gotta run first at the local crappy tire

Edited:
checked the website immediately after posting... sale is gone.  It was $39 yesterday, now it's $69... Dang!
