E-Test Help :-- (

92 acura integra 1.8L. Failed the e-test yesterday. Got it done after work so 20 mins on the hwy...had the oil changed at the shop (it wasn't due but did it anyway)...was burning reg fuel. The results were;

ASM2525 Test:
HC ppm Limit 66, reading 9, PASS
CO% Limit 0.37, reading 0.01, PASS
NO ppm Limit 505, reading 966, FAIL
RPM 1879 VALID
Dilution 14.8 Valid

Curb Idle Test:
HC ppm Limit 200, reading 31, PASS
CO% Limit 1.00, reading 0.06, PASS
NO ppm N/A
RPM 761 Valid
Dilution 14.8 Valid

EGR Present
Catalytic Converter Present
Gas Cap Pressure Test Pass
Fuel Filler Integrity Check Pass

So everything was well below the limit but it blew the NOx mark. Your opinion as to what is most likely to be the problem would be appreciated. Mech said its most likely the Cat. If it is the cat would all the reading not be much higher?

They always say it's the cat.  My Cherokee failed the NO, and the 'diagnostic' that was performed afterward said it was the cat.  I was running a K&N air filter at the time.  I filled the Jeep up with some 91 octane, replaced the K&N with a regular paper filter and drove around for a few days.  I went back and had it re-tested and passed with flying colours.

How's the air filter?  Some methyl hydrate added to your fuel tank a few days before the test should guarantee a pass.  Not that I'd know that from personal experience or anything.

I have a K&N air filter instead of a paper one as well...not an intake mod...I did not know a this could affect the NO reading..not sure how it would. But I will check the filter and see if it needs to be cleaned.

Methyl Hydrate?? This ones over my head. I get this from crappy tire?  It this the fuel injector cleaner stuff?

Why not buy a paper filter for the test only, and re-install the K&N AFTER you have passed?

Methyl Hydrate is used as a gasline antifreeze.  You should be able to find it at Crappy Tire.

Articsteve and Barrie1 should be able to offer their own take on the situation.

NOx is also causes by intake temperatures getting too high.  The EGR valve helps lower intake temps. (Exhaust Recirculation Valve).  Inspect/Replace the EGR valve.

Menthyl Hydrate is used as Gas Line Antifreeze but it really isen't the right product to use for this purpose. There is a difference in the 2 products. How old is the ignition and spark plug wires on this car and the thermostat as well. The fastest way to find out will be to have it hooked up to the Scope to read exactly what is happening. I believe you have to spend around $400. now to get even a one year pass. This is a Gov ripoff of the highest order as only some parts of the province even have to do this. Just another way of picking a poor mans pocket.

It says the repair cost limit is $450. The car was running hot I think about 2-3 years ago and I had to get the thermostat replaced. The ignition coil went soon after that. The spark plug wires and distributor cap were replaced about an 1 1/2 year ago.

It could be that the oil in the K%N filter is causing the problem as it can do damage in some engines in the fuel systems. I stand corrected on the $450.00 if thats what it is up to now. Even a bigger ripoff because of where we live in this province. I wouldn't mind paying the money so much if the Gov would do something useful with it instead of the usual stupid things they do.

Personally I would first go with Mr. T's solution to this because you don't want to chase this thing with parts as it never seems to work on a car that is well running already.

I did not know a this could affect the NO reading..not sure how it would

Well any time you introduce more air than normal you will alter what comes out the tailpipe.  Being a 1992 the PCM might not compensate for the increased air like the newer units might.

So to repeat Mr. T's advice; I would fill with Sunoco 94 which has 10% ethonal and I would dump in a litre of Crappy Tire's gasline antifreeze, get a regular air cleaner, drive the car on the highway for 20 minutes min like you did and get the car right into the testing bay within minutes of your arrival.

One of the few breaks I've caught in the automotive world is not to be in the "emissions zone".  That would have killed my modest fleet for sure.

It's probably the EGR as ChrisM mentioned. Luckily these are often easy to get out and clean/replace.

A mechanic advised me that the best way to make sure the car passes the e-test is by replacing the filters, make sure the air filter receptical is clean, that the plugs don't have 85,000 ks on them and take it for a one hour drive on the highway.

My wife's 2000 Taurus with 63,000 ks just passed the e-test.It still has the original plugs but the filters and oil get changed on a regular basis.
