Chevrolet gets no respect....Chevrolet is the single reason that GM still exists...Chevrolet needs a consistent "look"....Why?  If Chevrolet is so successful, why does it need a consistent "look"....oh, I see it in the last paragraph...so it can put "Ford and Toyota behind it"....

I think it will take more than a  consistent look to put Toyota behind it.

The article spends half its time explaining why Chevrolet is successful, and the other half explaining what it needs to do to be successful.  Which is it?

"Quite frankly, some of their products have been butt-ugly from the front and the back. Like the Malibu, it's not a particularly pretty face."

Saturn is being moved upstream and will eventually fill discontinued Oldsmobile's premium slot

Thank God!

I'd be really curious to see how successful GM is with moving Saturn upmarket.

The repositioning of car brands is really interesting to me, but maybe because the company I work for is majorly into branding.

A case in point is Honda. Honda in the UK started off like Honda in North America as a budget brand. Cheap, reliable but tacky cars.

However, although they moved up a little bit in North America, they moved up a lot in the Uk where they are bordering on being a premium brand.

The Honda name is today able to compete directly against BMW in the UK with the Honda Accord and the Honda Legend.

However, in North America, Honda failed to move that much upmarket and and had to invent the Acura label. The UK Accord and Legend are sold here in North America as the Acura TSX and the Acura Legend.

VW has done the same thing. In 50 years they have steadily been moving up from being the People's car through to being just about sub-premium.

Saturn's rise should be interesting to watch.

The Small Block Chev V8 engines are still the ones to beat at most tracks as you can't build any other engine to produce giant HP ratings as cheap as the Chevie's or as dependable. As far as the looks go with the new Chevs who isen't copying who now a days. to me 99% of all new cars resemble each other no matter who built them. There is only so much you can do with the shape of cars to make them more aerodynamic. All makers are doing this now as a way to help with the fuel no's they have to acheive. No more Boxy looking cars hardly at all as its cuts down on the milage. Stand back bout a block and tell me what most new cars are if you can as they all look alike now.

I was talking with a fellow two days ago regarding the Chevy Cobalt that he had as a "loaner" while his car was being fixed. His words were similar to "what a pile of crap", "noisy as hell", "lots of plastic s**t."

Not a good assessment of what's new at GM.

You can't satisfy everybody but many people like the car. They are getting very good reviews from many different writers as well.

haha...sorry to chide ya here Barrie,

But your defense to GM making ugly cars is that all cars look the same from about a block away??

I can just see the Chevy dealer trying to unload Malibus: "No, No...you can't come withing 100m of the vehicle....but boy, does it ever look 'decent' from here"

sorry

If the guy was driving a VW or Audi or BMW as his regular car, then agreed he might be very disappointed with what he finds in the Cobalt.

But if he was driving an old Pony, Chevette or Pinto, he might hail it as a huge improvement.

It's all about perspective.

No "might" about that one.  It's all a continuum, and I guess if you're moving up, you're moving up.

They're ambiguous cars.

What are they? No style, little personality... there's history, but it cannot be pinpointed unless you're talkin' Corvette, Camaro, or Corvair.

Chevrolet is transportation value, and even then...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Go look in the average parking lot and tell me how many cars you can recognize from a distance of even 200 ft. They all have the same roundness to them and are very ugly in my view. Its not just the GM's but all makes. There's very little individuality in most of them so you have look more then once to know what they are. Who's copying Who as they are all copying each other. IMO.
