Newbie: Tire Help Needed!!
« on: August 05, 2005, 12:04:21 am »
I want to say hello to everyone on the forum..I'm a complete newbie and would really appreciate some help, or advice..I have a 2000 Honda Civic Sedan Se 4dr..The car has FIRESTONE tires on it right now P185/65/R14 M+S 85S with 103,000 kms and I'm in the market for new tires..Unfortunately I don't have alot of money to spend ($60-$80 possibly $90 range per tire)..I was wondering if there r any suggestions on a decent tire, or best bang for the buck..I was told about ROAD KING tires not sure if anyone has heard of the brand and also ULYSSESS..Your time and help would be greatly appreciated..Thanks to everyone

In your tire size (185/65R14), I would go with the Falken ZIEX ZE-512. It is H-rated with a load rating of 86. Price at Tiretrends.com is just under $70/tire. Like most all season tires, it's a three season tire (spring/summer/fall). So you will need to get a set of four winter tires, severe snow rated...if you plan to drive in the winter.

I'd definitely also go with what Davidy suggests for your size and car.  Another good choice, though more expensive is the BF Goodrich Traction T/A (T-rated), which would be worth you looking into if you can find a deal.
Suck, squeeze, bang, blow - who wouldn't love the internal combustion engine?  ;D

Hey there Davidy and Weebl thank u both for taking the time to help me out..I totaly understand where u r coming from Davidy about buying seperate tires for the winter, however money is a major factor..I was hoping to buy one set of tires for all 4 seasons..Sorry don't mean to be difficult, but again I stress that money is a factor..My budget is between $60-$90 per tire before taxes and I was hoping to get something half decent..I was told about ROAD KING ($65 per tire) and ULYSSESS (Wal*Mart $62.98 per tire) and was just wondering what reputation they have, if they have any..My guess is they r probably crappy tires..Any recommendations for a decent all around 4 season tire would be greatly appreciated..Thanking everyone in advance

I've never heard of Road King and the Wal-Mart specials, despite being made by Kumho, are absolutely horrible!

What part of the country do you live in, and what sort of winter conditions do you normally drive in?  You're likely going to have to fork out a few more dollars for something that would fit the bill year round, like the Nokian All Weather (pretty much the only true all season tire), or a regular all season that doesn't suck as much as the average at mild winter conditions, like you'd get in Vancouver.

As your profile says Toronto, my favourite tire shop in the GTA is Steelcase Tires near 404 and Steeles.    They'll hook you up with a decent tire at a good price.

The Falkens are an excellent deal, and can be found at local dealers as well.

Finally, if money is a short, you can try the classifieds at www.torontocivics.com.  A lot of guys will take the OEM tires off their Civics and sell them at well below cost.

Also talk to the guys at Nantucket Tires & Mags (near Kennedy and Ellesmere).  I'm sure they can set you up with a good tire/price combination that fits your needs.

Heard good things about them, too.  On the other hand, Wheels Direct in Scarborough put 2 of 4 directional tires on backwards for me, even if the price was good.

Nacster, the tire you probably want is the Nokian WR.  This tire has a 100,000 km treadwear rating, and is the only "all-weather" tire on the Canadian market (at least as far as I know) that meets the severe winter service criteria reserved normally for dedicated winter tires.

It's available in your size.  As far as pricing is concerned, I can't find a Canadian retailer listing its price online, but you could easily grab your local yellow pages, and call some of your nearby reputable tire dealers.  I suspect it might cost you a little more than $90, but I doubt by very much more.  It is definitely worth the few extra dollars.
