Stinky brake pads
« on: August 02, 2005, 05:12:59 pm »
A few months ago I bought C. Tire's Monroe brake pads on my Caravan. They were installed at C. Tire, together with new rotors.
Right after that I started to get a smell of burnt rubber from the front wheels each time I got home. Actually I think it smelled all the time but it was stronger inside my garage. The smell faded with time, but came back this weekend, after driving on a long winding road, when the brakes got real hot.
The brakes perform OK, I can't find anthing else wrong with the minivan.
Anyone else experienced this?

Same here as well. Next time its on a hoist have them check for the rubber bushings in the front end as something may be loose or rubbing. There is no rubber in any brand of pads or shoes for any make I have ever heard of.

Thanks for the advice.
Anyway I learned my lesson, I'll never bring my car to C-Tire again.

Actually rubber is used in brake material but not enough to get the smell. You may want to check your calipers to see if they are seizing as that will heat up the rubber bushings and do some damage.

BMW oem pads smell this way when abused

I have changed all the brake discs of my SUV at canadian tire with monroe brand. No smell so far, have been driving for almost 18 months at more than 24,000km/year.
I have kept the same rotors.
