A/C Vent control
« on: August 01, 2005, 05:55:51 pm »
My `97 Grand Prix air conditioning system works fine and all speeds (from 1-5)seem to work OK. But it won`t go to "MAX" and I`ve also noticed that no matter what speed I set it to, if for instance, I put it to the upper vents, it doesn`t make the switch. The air comes out of all areas equally. Likewise, if I put it to defrost, it makes no difference.
Seeing that I have 1-5 speeds working and thankfully I have air conditiong, is there a vacuum hose or something that I should be looking for. Or is it totally "bad news"?

Some of these systems do have a air setup under the dash. They are rubber hoses so one of them may be off or is blown. Anybody had their feet in the wrong spot lately. I have seen that happen as they pushed the hoses off accidently. Also look for some of the plastic joiners to be cracked as they are plastic and can get brittle and crack as well.

Thanks Barrie. I guess I`ll try and take a look. Will I be able to (somewhat) see it easily. These `97 Grand Prix`s don`t leave a whole lot of room to manouvre. I`ve got that "mid 50`s" build!

I suspect you will be hanging upside down for part of this task as it is a little crowded under these dash's. A Proper service manual would help you a lot on the location of the main cluster of hoses. Maybe a good sized library can help with a good manual to repair this problem.

After 247,000 Km, it`s probably a little too late for a proper manual. But the car`s been great to this point. It just may be a good investment. Thanks for your help and support.
