Yokohama Geolander A/T+II
« on: July 31, 2005, 02:19:13 pm »
Hi guys,
I was thinking to put this tire on my 2001 4Runner SR5. Size 265 R70 16. I talked to 2 different tire guys One said this would be a great tire for my vehicle though there may be a bit more road noise, preformance would be very good.  The other guy said that this tire on my 4Runner would "ride like a horse" meaning that the ride would be very bumpy and that I would feel every bump/rock on the road. In short he did not recomend the Geolander A/T+II for my vehicle instead he recomended the Michelin LTX or the BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A.  I like the look of the AT+II but am concerned that the ride may be too aggresive for my very young passengers.  My question is am I going to be ok with the A/T+II or should I consider another tire.  My father-inlaw has this tire on his 2000 Pathfinder and is happy with them but the Pathfinder is a Unibody vehicle and my 4Runner has a full frame so I can't really compare. What do you guys think?

Bob

Sounds fishy to me. I had a set of the Michelin's on a Pathfinder, and found they offered a smooth & quiet highway ride. They were P-rated (as they are in your size as well), so that is to be expected.

Both the Geolandars and the All-Terrain T/As are LT-rated, so I'd expect either of them to ride much stiffer than the Michelins.

I've never driven the Geolandars, but have heard nothing but good things about them. I have driven on the All-Terrains and found them to offer a much quieter and somewhat smoother ride than I had expected. They were on a one-ton van, though, so they might not ride as smooth on something a little less portly.

Generally the 4-Runner prefers to have a 4-ply or P-metric type tire. The Tire dealer is correct in saying you may find the ride stiff if you go with a 6-ply or LT type tire. Some people are willing to sacrifice the ride quality to get a more aggressive tire, but most will find it too stiff.

The AT+II is a great tire, but if you want to stay with Yoko and avoid the rough ride consider the Geolander HTS. Nice ride and well priced. A little less aggressive, but a very competent All-Season and quiet.

Thanks for your input guys.
My uncle put Michelin LTX 265/70R16 on his 2000 4Runner and has good things to say about them.  I think I may give them a try.

I had the LTX M/S on my Mazda B2500 and really enjoyed them.  They are quiet and smooth on the HWY and I was able to get through an ottawa winter on them with no major issues.  Plus the had a very long lasting compound, so you won't be replacing them anytime soon.
My dad also ran these on his pathfinder and swore by them.
