Selling the car next year but need new tires now!
« on: July 30, 2005, 09:34:01 pm »
My other half is planning to trade in his 1996 MB C220 next fall. He needs to replace the tires right now. OEM size is 195-65-15 V-rated. What brands out there are reasonably priced but suitable for a MB? We don't want to spend $200 per tire since the car will be replaced next year, but on the other hand, safety is important. We have a set of Nokian winter tires so the new tires would only be used for the balance of this summer/fall and next summer. Thanks in advance.

Might want to have a look through this thread: http://www.canadiandriver.com/discus/messages/2479/36308.html?1122753292. Some good advice, and specific MB experience there.

In a nutshell, though, here's all you need to know: Kumho Ecsta ASX, 195/65R15, V-rated, 98 bucks a tire at TireTrends.

How much driving are you planning on doing?  And how much is left on the winter tires?  Depending on that, I might even suggest slapping the winters on until the car is sold, but of course that is only if the car will see limited low speed use from now until it is sold.
Suck, squeeze, bang, blow - who wouldn't love the internal combustion engine?  ;D

Just a suggestion but I wouldn't waste too many dollars on tires that you are going to use for less than 1 year of driving.  I would go to Canadian Tire, they always have tires on sale. Get the cheapest tires that fit, you can get not the best tires but decent tires there for easily $70 a tire.  Plus they will probably still look decent when you sell it.

If you want an inexpensive option that gets good ratings consider the Falken ZE512...

I've had good experience with Hankook.  Cheaply priced tires that do not scarifice ride. Have them both on 924S and SIR driven hard (102s and 104s).  Dunno about tread life because that is not our focus.

Thanks everyone. The Kumho Ecsta ASX and Falken ZE 512 both seem to get good consumer ratings. (I will also be going to Canadian Tire to check out their selection.) Between, the Kumho and Falken mentioned above, which would you choose? My boyfriend is not an aggressive driver, however, there are *crazy* drivers out there which may require fancy maneouvring of the MB.   .

you can visit a few local reputable tire shop and ask them about used tires.

I'd have mentioned the Falkens before, but I believe that in your size they only come with an H speed rating.

Aggressive driver or not, I'd stick with what Mercedes recommends - and that means a V-rated tire.

Hmm, on second thought, I guess I'm just assuming that Mercedes actually spec'ed the car with V-rated tires. I would hope that the V-rated tires on there now aren't the original equipment tires from 1996.

Check the owner's manual or tire info placard - maybe H-rated is fine after all.
