Vintage Volvo Race Tires Wanted
« on: July 29, 2005, 01:27:42 pm »
I have a 1968 Volvo 122s Vintage Race car that uses 195.60.15 tires on 15x6 rims. Currently it has Yokohama A008r's which are worn out.  I have found 2 new old stock, and am looking for 2 more (one A and one B)either new or in good shape.Any out there?
If I can't find, anyone have any idea how these would compare to the EVS 100? Nothing else available in that size that I can find that is a true race tire except some very expensive Dunlops
Thanks.

A couple of thoughts:

I would not race on old tires.  Just like street tires, the rubber in race tires deteriorates over time - only here you're stressing the tires to get speed.

Most TRUE (meaning no compromise) race tires use this sizing system:  OD / width - rim diameter = 24  /7.5 - 15 (the equivalent of 195/60-15)

What you've posted is DOT type sizing - and that might be appropriate for your car and the class it used to run in - and the class you are running in now.  But it might be time to move to a different size (technology marches forward, even in vintage racing) and there are tires available that are appropriate.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks. I would be really interested in your specific suggestions as we are limited to stock rim size plus 1.5 inches, hence I have 15x6 wheels and we are limited to max 60 aspect ratio. To my knowledge with about a month of search there is a $275 Dunlop (from Vintyre and a Hoosier(from Hoosiers Candian rep) at about the same price plus ship and tax each. I am trying to reduce those costs a bit. Vintage Volvo

You have a real problem.  I would suggest you go to the sanctioning organization and explain your situation and findings.  They ought to give you a special dispensation.

(Whispered, so no one will hear!)  Or you might just buy what will work and then put up with the protests.  The penalties shouldn't be too bad - unless you're running up front - and since you're worried about costs, you won't be.

Hope this helps.

Nice turn of phrase, Capri!

Too bad it's true.
