Volvo 850 GLT Wagon (1996) - value?
« on: July 25, 2005, 04:37:26 pm »
Hello experts,

What might a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT Wagon be worth?  The one I'm considering looks to be in excellent shape but has 175,000KM.

Thanks!

Anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000.
Thats low mileage on a Volvo.

Thanks.

The price I'm looking at is CAN$7,900, private sale, certified and e-tested (Ontario).

Any other info on the 850 GLT would be helpful - any cautions, things to look out for or benefits?

I have a 1988 740 wagon with 337,000km.  Any idea what it might fetch (very good body, good mechanical, certifiable).

Thanks again

Any 1988 car with 300K plus is a $1000 car, tops.

On the 850, watch for leaking AC evaporators (common problem) and faulty (squeaky) blower motors.  Have it carefully inspected by a good Volvo mechanic and expect to have to drop $1K on it, regardless of "certified" status.
No place I'd rather be...

Just the usuals with a 10 year old car. EVERYTHING

Best Volvo 850 resource is found at Bay 13 at www.volvospeed.com

Assuming it is an automatic.  Servicing is everything.  Timing belt, timing belt tensioner and water pump should be confirmed as regular tranny servicing.

$7900 is OK if it has had all the usuals recently; rad, starter, exhaust, brakes, suspension parts, etc. and no leaks.

Wholesale it is worth $3500.

I bought my 1993 850 GLT sedan 3 years ago with 175 000km on the clock for $6200 taxes in.  Expect to pay a $500-$1000 premium for the wagon.  So a maximum fair price would be around $7200, taxes in.  Watch the A/C (mine's shot), excessive brake wear (a common Volvo problem), dead ABS sensors (I've got one).  MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE TIMING BELT! That way you have a baseline - you know when it was done.  A broken timing belt is FATAL to these cars.  Watch tie rod ends as well.  As with all Euro cars, expect some electrical glitches.

PS - roadkill may get caught in the front suspension (see a thread called "The Pursuit of Happiness" under General Automotive Discussion.)

Take one dead squirrel.  Place inside pie crust.  Place inside Volvo 850 (Wagon or Sedan) during a week long Ontario heatwave.  It's ready when you can't drive the car without projectile vomiting over the steering wheel and instrument cluster.  Rmmove from car and dig in! MMM, MMM, that's good roadkill!
