Seized and don't know how to start
« on: July 21, 2005, 06:47:56 pm »
Well this is my first time here, so I'll try to keep it short.
I have a 94 osmobile achieva s with a 3.1 v6 engine. The air conditioning is seized and it broke my serpentine belt in the mean time.
Is this worth fixing and what does it take to get it fixed? Please help.
Amanda

Hi Amanda, welcome to the forum.  Fixing your compressor will most likely involve replacing it.  Unfortunately I don't think your make and model with that engine size was ever offered without AC, so just taking off the compressor and getting a different belt is probably not an option.  If only the compressor is toast and the clutch/pulley is OK, you might be able to just pull the 2 wire plug off the compressor and then put a new belt on and let the clutch pulley free wheel for the rest of your time with the car.  But if the pulley part of the equation is gone, then it's compressor replacement time.  Lowest price will be from a salvage yard, but be warned you get what you pay for with used parts.  ANy good salvage yard will provide a warranty but it won't cover labour or another belt if the used part fails.  Reman compressors can run over $400 with a clutch pulley, (you've got to ask because they don't automatically come with one), but used ones are less than half that.
If selling and fixing cars were easy, car makers would be doing it.
