1997 mazda Protégé autobox issues

The '97 Protégé my Dad bought is having transmission issues.  It's shifting hard on take-off - it spends a milli seceond in 1st, and then goes bang into second.  Any thoughts on what to do?  Is this the Ford autobox that has proven problematic?

It's the Mazda autoboxes themselves that are problematic!

I've no clue about the technical aspect tho.

This was posted before but I thought anything after 1996 was refined.  I can't remember the link.

So when was the tranny filter changed and when did it receive a full flushing?

"Transmedic" by gunk is the last resort.  But you should do a filter and flush before using it.
