What I'm getting at, is that in a low-speed crash, up to around 40-50km/h, a modern airbag is unlikely to inflate. It is designed to protect you in high-speed crashes.
Skypoint, you mentioned this was on the BBC? I believe there is a huge difference (at least there used to be) between European and North American seatbelts. Being designed primarily for the American market, where people tend not to wear seatbelts, they tend to deploy with relatively low crash force (about 20 km/h i think), versus European specs, where seatbelt usage is very high and will deploy only in much more serious crashes (40 to 50 km/h I think). Too bad we get the dumbed-down versions here in Canada thanks to our neighbours to the south.
