Maybe they're used airbags, not bald airbags, just used ones.

I don't know when they started installing Airbags but the timing is about right in that time frame. My, how times flys past us. I would assume these would be 1st generation airbags in this car and hopefully still able to work correctly. Sure hope so for your sake Camero owner. I would suggest check with your local GM dealer to run the VIN on the car which will tell you for sure what options you have and what the life expectency is for these parts. As these are expensive parts I am is rooting for you and your pocket.

What I'm getting at, is that in a low-speed crash, up to around 40-50km/h, a modern airbag is unlikely to inflate. It is designed to protect you in high-speed crashes.

Skypoint, you mentioned this was on the BBC?  I believe there is a huge difference (at least there used to be) between European and North American seatbelts.  Being designed primarily for the American market, where people tend not to wear seatbelts, they tend to deploy with relatively low crash force (about 20 km/h i think), versus European specs, where seatbelt usage is very high and will deploy only in much more serious crashes (40 to 50 km/h I think).  Too bad we get the dumbed-down versions here in Canada thanks to our neighbours to the south.
Suck, squeeze, bang, blow - who wouldn't love the internal combustion engine?  ;D

I thought that after 10 years, you're supposed to have your airbags tested/inspected/replaced?

All these people scared of airbags remind me of all the people who used to be against seatbelts, car seats for kids, lifejackets, bike helmets...new safety technology always upsets some folks, and they are always the first to come up with stories like, I know a guy who drowned because he couldn't get his seatbelt undone...etc etc

I dunno about you guys, but I don't think I need any more brain damage than I already have (some self inflicted, some by others)!

I would rather have Airbags and not need them then need them and not have them. They do save lives and many major injuries.

I've heard that too.  How does one go about getting that done, and more specifically, what do the people inspecting the system actually do?
