Buying a car in ON to bring to BC
« on: July 15, 2005, 02:31:09 pm »
I'm close to buying a car in ON and having it auto-railed to BC. According to the seller (dealer), the car will be registered under his name from the time of shipment from ON to the time of arrival in BC. When it arrives in BC, the seller will advise ON Ministry of Transport that the car has been moved to BC then I will take the car to the BC Ministry of Transport to get it registered under my name. Is this the proper procedure? My concern is that my friend in TO will be handing over the payment to the dealer just prior to shipment yet the car will be registered under the sellers name while in transit. It's like he still owns the car even when it reaches BC.

My guess is part of the reason to do that is to avoid you paying PST to Ontario, which you would have to do to get it into your own name. When you register it in BC, you will pay the BC PST of 7%. The dealer's insurance covers it to BC offloading. The buyer holds his purchase agreement and receipt. Sounds reasonable to me.

Ovr50, thanks for your feedback. I'm feeling assured now the dealer is doing the right thing i.e. avoiding me paying the ON PST. Yes, I understand I will have pay the BC PST when the car arrives here. Regarding insurance, the auto-transport company includes a zero-deductible insurance as part of the cost. Is there additional insurance I would need to get? Thanks again.

Don't take my sole word on this, I'm just one voice here; but my comments are the best of my knowledge. I wouldn't think you would need any additional coverage.
