What's my offset?
« on: July 13, 2005, 05:42:53 pm »
I'm casually looking for some wheels for my '02 Protege ES-GT, stock is 195-50-16 with 5 X 114.3 bolt pattern.  What is my offset, and what is the range that I can get away with?

I've seen info on several sites with my offset ranging from 0 to 48 mm.  Will the offset be different if I go up to 17's?  How can I tell the offset when looking at used wheels; is there a number stamped in the wheel somewhere?

Any info/advice/links are greatly appreciated.

I can't tell you your offset - I'd talk to a tire store with an automotive centre (like Canadian Tire, for example) and see what they say.  I can tell you, though, what to look for in a 17":  P225/70R17 should put you in the right ballpark for new wheels.  Cost anywhere from $150 to $600 per tire.

48mm offset should work on a 17 rim with 205/45/17 tires and possibly 215/40/17 tires.

I don't know if it's possible to see the offset from looking at the rim.  I've never tried.

You are right, MDX with the tire size of 215-40-17 being the closest to the stock 16's (603.8mm vs stock 601.4mm).  Where did you get the 48 offset number from?  Demo, your suggestion for tire size is way off.

I'm not too concerned about tires, it's the wheels that I am looking at right now.  I forgot to ask what is the stock wheel width and what widths would safely work with my Protege, and again, what offsets would be acceptable.

Thanks.

I was cruising Tire Rack...if you pick your car and select 17" rims that fit your car, click on a rim for the details of it and the offset is shown.  I don't know if the Tire Trends site does that but I assume it should as well.

Tire Trends doesn't give that detailed info on the wheels in the test track, and I wouldn't dream of going to another site other than Tire Trends (wink, wink, Morty).

Tirerack isn't always correct either, they list 45 offset and 18" wheels only for my car, when the car comes with 16's and 17's and a WAY higher offset than that.

Lost it on this one. Generally do not recommend going lower than a +45 offset on this car. That being said we have seen some adventurous customers run +40 with no problems on 7" wide wheels. Recommend running a 205/45/17 sized tire for best fit.

Ziggy is right we dont display all of the info in the Test Track...that would be too easy. If you click buy wheels then it will show you the offset in the shopping cart. Also use our new search feature to build packages.

As per the following link, the offset for a Protege is either +45 or +50...one is for a 4x100 bolt pattern, the other is for a 5x114.3, respectively.

I have seen lots of wheels that would fit my car with a +38 offset.  Would this be too 'adventurous' and what would be the effects of using a smaller offset?

+38 is a little low and will likely cause the tire to rub on the fender. If your heart is set on something that low...do a test fit to be sure!
