Recommend a Tire? -summer vs all season
« on: July 11, 2005, 12:52:06 pm »
hello,

i'm trying to find a new tire for my 01 acura cl-s. it is lowered w/18's.  currently have yoko es100 in 235/40. although they perform well, they wear out too qucikly.  Whats a good replacement for them. I would like to stay with some bigger brands. I'm looking for a tire with i can get some higher usage out of then the es100s.

Some tires I was thinking of were: BFG-T/A KDW2, Goodyear F1 GS-D3, Michelin PE2, Toyo T1R

Also how are these all season tires compared to the summer tires: Michelin PS A/S and the Pirelli P-zero M&S?

Thanks for the help

The stickier tires you metioned like the Goodyear and Toyo (I don't know the others) will last the same or less mileage than the es100.  If you want longevity you will have to go to the A/S tires, but give up stickiness.  Do you already have a separate winter set?  If you do, I'd stay with sticky summer tires, and go with Falken, Kumho, Hankook, etc. which make great tires at significantly lower prices than the big name brands you've mentioned.  That way you can afford to replace them the bit more often.

I knew the summer tires have shorter life, but the es100's seemed to have super short life, like somthing with a 220 utqg.  I heard the goodyears and michelins last a little longer... Don't want to get kumhos as i had a set before and had 2 flats during the time i had them. Heard good things about Falkens tho.

How much performance do you think i will be giving   up if i wend with the pirelli m&s or the ps a/s?

thanks

I am not sure it was Kuhmo's fault that you got 2 flat tires.  Flat's do happen...often caused by debris on the road.

Measuring performance is subjective, but I know that in my personal experience (Pirrelli P6 & Dunlop SP5000 vs Toyo T1-S & Falken 451) the big difference is in wet performance, particularly cornering (vs hydroplaning).  I find the traction and treadware ratings from manuafactureres to be useless for comparison.  How much mileage did you get on the es100's, that will let us know what you think was not enough.  What would you like to see?

Agree with MDX, your Kumho experience I don't think has anything to do with the tires.  Lots of great Kumho tires with high praise.

I'm quite happen with my Falken 451's - not as good as the top-tier summer tires, but much better than the A/S compromise tires.  Probably half way in between your es100s and the top end tires you mentioned.

with the kumho's i had.  the first flat was probably caused by road debris, but the 2nd flat was a sidewall blowout. i always check my psi and keep tires rotated.  i liked the perfomance for the price of the 712s, but felt the durablity is a little low.
As for the es100s, i think i got less then 17k with them. I would like somthing that will goto 20k or more.

I think i'm leaning towards the kdw2's....

For my 2004 CLK320, I did my research and decided on a set of Pirelli Pzero Nero M&S.  My decision was based on ride comfort, low noise level, long treadwear with decent grip.  I do have dedicated winter tires.

So far, after 3K-4K KM, I found these tires to be execellent.

Sidewall blowouts are a common symptom of low-profile tires. The blowout can happen with any brand. The real culprit is the condition of the roads. Potholes can do in any tire, worse for low-profiles.

If you are looking for more longevity it will be at the expense of dry traction and handling. You need to decide what is most important and go from there. If you want straight summer performance the tires you mention would be great choices. However, if you want more longevity then the suggestion of going to an all-season type tire is a good one. The tires in bigger name brands to look at would be the Pirelli P-Zero Nero MS, Michelin Pilot Sport AS and Toyo Proxes 4. If you want to broaden the options also consider Hankook V4es and Kumho ASX.
