I wonder if GM is going to bring this to Canada now that both Ford and Chrysler have. Hopefully some good deals spawn from this price war.

GM's gas discount works out to be a whopping $500.00. I'd rather see that taken off the price of the car and take my chances at the pumps.
-0.20 per litre x 2500 = $500.00.
I use approximately 40 litres of gas every two weeks which works out to be 1040 L per year.
If I applied GM's gas discount it would work out to be:
0.20 x 1040 = $208.00
It's not as attractive deal as it seems. I wonder how many people are going to be fooled by this.

You forgot to carry the two and multipy by 5/8. I still calculated $3000.
Combine that deal, with 0%, add the GM points you get from you Visa...and it's still a pony short.

Well really, that's in addition to all the other discounts.
So, say $3,500 off plus the 20cents off with the gas, or would it look more attractive to say $3,708 off? It's another effort/incentive to lure people is all.

On average, would the employee discount equate to a $3500 discount anyway? Just curious.

It could depending on the model. A Caddie gives us 19.5% off the list price for example. Not sure on the Chevs and others at the moment.

When GM had 'Employee Discount for Everyone' in the US last month, they were the only manufacturer running it. Now, the other Big 2 are. It's a level playing field again. They're blowing their own brains out. At least GM adjusted some inventory
. The discounts as they stand are nearly already what they would be at employee level, but I guess saying they are lends some credibility. I think a more brillant marketing machine could be devised. But what?
One would imagine meetings have been long yesterday and today...

Reminds me of an actual verbal exchange that did really happen to one of my auditing colleagues back in the late 60s in Calgary. My friend, who we'll call Dave, went out on a job of a large, discount supermarket operation in east Calgary. The owner was not too sharp on financial things and only had an occassional book-keeper. Dave used to go out and write up the Profit & Loss statement for the owner about every quarter. On one trip out there, after Dave did his work, he sat down with the owner and said: "Owner, your cost of sales is exceeding your gross revenue. How can you stay in business if you do that?". To which the owner replied: "Easy, Dave, volume."
Reminds me of the deep discounting going on now with the Big 3.

Do you really believe the big 3 would sell their vehicles at a loss? Come on!
Even at employee discount, they still make a profit.
Might be skinny but it still is profit.
They will just continue to cut cost, maybe later start making cars in China/India and ship them back to USA.

Will the dealers start adding all sorts of outragios admin fees now?
The profits may be very skinny for dealers, but the manufacturer usually gives the dealer a kickback.Thats what was sopposed to happen when I tried to buy my Gp under an x-plan purchase.Dealer tried to back end all sorts of outragious charges, while documentation spelled out the discount and kickback structure.
GMAC and Ford Credit will probobly make lots of profit financing and leasing the cars, while the losses on cars are written off.

The profit will be in the financing and other non-auto production areas. GM was already operating at a loss per vehicle before the deep discounts. Then again, who knows what the real costs are anyway?
