Lower Ball joint question
« on: July 06, 2005, 08:50:28 am »
I have an 89 Honda Accord and recently have had the lower ball joint (ball joint which is attached to the hub)discontect from it's place while driving. I have purchased a new nut and while tighting the nut half way up the threaded stud from the ball joint starts to turn with the nut making it impossible for me to fully tighten the nut and place an cotter pin for security. Is this because the ball joint is damaged that it is turning or am I doing something wrong. Please help.

Regards

An impact gun might do it.  I know that there are special tools for older Honda ball joints:

How would the impact gun hold the stud from turning?

You can put a lot of force/pressure on the stud and that might stop the rotation while the gun socket spins the nut on in about a second.  If I was there I'd get it tight.  I run into this BS weekly.  You can try a clamp.  I'd need to see it really.  Keep at it unless the ball joint itself is way to loose and is shot.

And if it's loose, for safety sake replace it while everything is apart.

Maritime is quite correct as I would suspect this ball joint is getting very tired and should be replaced as well. Probably the reason that this has come loose to begin with.
