Tinting Antenna Integrated Window
« on: July 05, 2005, 04:01:45 am »
My new Subie Outback is suppose to be in this week @ the dealer & i wanna get the 5 back windows tinted.

The antenna is integrated into the rear window.  I've heard conflicting info (from tint shops) re hybrid films on the antenna window will prevent me from receiving am and reduce my fm quality (yes i still listen to the radio - talk radio junkie).

can anyone confirm one way or the other?  any personal exp?  i've checked out tintcenter.com, but couldn't find any info.

any recommended tint films?  any recommend tint shops in the Vancouver area?

p.s. tinting 2b done after mkt - don't wanna get ripped by the dealer's markup.

I've had my antenna integrated rear window tinted and I had no problem with any radio reception.

Same with my former Forester - no problem. The tint is on the INSIDE of the window - it can not block the radio waves coming from the outside.

Not 100% true in theory if the tint has a high metal content and is "grounded" which is unlikely.
( it would alter the characteristics of the antenna by introducing a ground plane 1/8th inch away from it)

but never mind, in practice it will make no difference

I'm trying to figure out how one would go about grounding the tint layer. Could be done, but it would take some effort!

did you guys use a hybrid tint film?

i got emails from a couple hi-end mfr saying that there haven't been any probs w/their products, but no guarantee & recommend use of non-metal/non-hybrid films to be sure.

i'll probably just go with a hi-end anyway.

still have a few days to decide before i get the new subie.  still waiting for the dealer's call that it's ready.

one would lay a trail of metallic paint to one end of the  heater connection.   But I dont think there is enough metal in the film to make any difference at am/fm or even Xm/Sirius frequencies...although there MIGHT be enough metal to help a police radar...

Angasal, it doesnt matter anyway, as AVtoller says, its on the inside and my point was very theoretical

The tint installer can also cut the film to allow the lines to slightly bulge out and this way the tint will lay flat on the window. Not a big deal as long as you use the non metallic film.

It didn't interfere with radio reciption on the coupe either.  It did look really crappy along the top so we had it cut off.  Looks way better now.
