1994 Ford Probe 24V
« on: July 03, 2005, 11:08:26 pm »
I have my eye on a 1994 Ford Probe 24V. Asking Price is Can$4500.-. Just like to get some input whether or not that is a good value. It looks like that car has been repainted. But i don't think its been done in a shop. There are some small errors in the paintjob. I don't know what the mileage is yet. But it seems to have all the power options.

Anyhow, i don't know anyhing about the Ford Probe, and i like to get your imput.

Thanks,

Hi Ho Aholenstein and Welcome to the forum.

As a past service manager for 2 Ford stores, I can say without doubt you should run, not walk away from a Probe.  Probe represented one of the Mazda Ford joint projects where the sum of the parts was definitely less than the input.  From electrical to electronic to various susp and chassis faults, the list is too long to mention here.  New parts from dealers can make a $4500 initial investment look slim and $4500 is way too much money regardless of mileage.  Set your Google search on Ford Probe forums or complaints to see what I mean
If selling and fixing cars were easy, car makers would be doing it.

two friends of mine have had the Mazda Mystere version of that car and had respectively 5 and 10 years with no problems at all.

Adding to what Exserviceguy said, the fact that it has been repainted should also be a MAJOR run-away signal. There is a good chance that it was in a major accident or that it had significant rust issues. BAD deal!!!

A paint job not done in a shop no less! Are the brush marks noticeable?

I'm with Exserviceguy. The Probe was one of Ford's nightmares and most Ford mechanics will tell you the same thing.

Well, some ppl may have had problems with their probes..or mx6's or any other car out there on the road.
Ive had my '94 mx6 (same platform etc as the probe) since new, and have not had any major problem that other makes/models havent encountered...
Check out...http://forums.probetalk.com/ and see what owners have to say....23385 members Im sure can give you some input.
Automatic tranmissions are an issue, some have had rear brake caliper problems and the ignitor in the disty has been problematic on the '94s - as I did, tho mine is a manual trany... - but then again, Ive had to change the alternator twice on my wife's '95 Monte and her A/C still doesnt work......so much for trouble free cars.  Theyre arent any!!!
I do think that $4500. may be a bit high for that probe.
