Alrighty...need a new set of 205/40/17.  Don't need R compounds or anything....just something that has a great balance of grip and longevity at a reasonable price.  The car currently has Yoko A520's on them now....

I've had Kuhmo 711's in the past....decent tire at a great price.  It's not as performance oriented as some other options out there.  Anything else?

I'll revive that E30 thread in the used cars section.

MDX, I was recently looking at Tiretrends specials for replacements for my A4.  Maybe take a chance on the Hankook Ventus V4ES - V rated all season high performance.  Check for the sizing, but these were a steal at $100 each in 205/55/16 size.  If it turns out you don't like them, they were not a bank buster to start with.

The V4es is a nice new offering from Hankook, but doesnt come in the required 205/40/17. If you are looking for longevity with performance look at the Kumho Ecsta ASX and Pirelli P-Zero Nero MS. If you are looking for more grip and some longevity then consider tires like the BFG gForce Sport and Kumho Ecsta SPT.

So many choices in this size makes you freakin' crazy. Speaking of crazy...if you want crazy grip we will be having a one day sale coming next week on the Kumho Ecsta MX. If you want some grip it is the way to go.

Hey Mort,

I'm looking for daily driver type tires but will also give me decent grip.  I don't need all out grip at all....it'd be nice but the car needs to get me to work.

Then look at the P-Zero Nero and Kumho ASX. Both would fit the bill nicely.

Morty's right, way too many choices.  Toyo Proxes 4 seems to fit your requirements very nicely.

Too many options. Proxes4 is another nice tire, just wont last quite as long.

Morty,

I'm looking at the proxes 4 for my new Mazda P5.  What kind of mileage would one expect from this tire given an even balance of highway/city & relaxed/spirited driving?

guessing 30 to 40K maybe more. Really depends how you drive. If you like to push a tire it will wear faster. If you are a really hard driver tires will scrub off much quicker.

How's that for a vague answer?

Thanks for all your help Mort.  I went to check the air pressure and noticed that the tire was in pretty rough shape.  So for the sake of safety, I decided I could not wait for new tires to be shipped over and got tires locally.  Thanks for your suggestions Morty.

I ended up trying a set of Nexen N3000.

Thanks Morty.

"How's that for a vague answer? "

About what I was expecting really. So hard to guess.  You lowballing on this one so I don't come back saying "but you said...."?

30 to 40K isn't a  lot. Again, I am used to my Mazda B2500 which is good on tires (albeit with mostly hwy. driving).  Any other recommendations, summer or A/S? I like the michelin exalto (PE2 or A/S), but don't know if they are worth the price.  And I would like to stick with the stock size.

MDX no problem I guess advice is like air sometimes...free!

Tortoise...kind of a lowball, but not really. High performance life has a lot to do with the tire and how you drive it. If you use it for what it was designed and drive the s--t out of it, they will not last too long. However, you would enjoy them.

The Exalto A/S is all new, so cant say much. As for price, is a Rolex worth more than a Timex? Depends who is buying it.

B2500 is a tough benchmark to beat on tire life. Had a friend who got over 200K from the stock Bridgestones. A case where the OE tires last a long time. (not all OE are bad)

Thanks Morty,

I like the Rolex comparison, nicely done.

On the B2500 I got 80,000 km out of the stock firestone wilderness  HT's. There was a ton of tread left on them but i decided to replace them as the rubber was cracking.

I'm gonna go for the proxes. Unfortunately I don't  really want to wait for the tires to be shipped from tire trends so I'll be buying them from a local Ottawa shop. The current dunlops are really worn with large cracks on them.  However, I'll have time when ordering my winter tires and you can bet that I'll be getting them from you.

Thanks again.

Hey Mort, I really like my new Kumho MXs.  Went for a spirited drive with two other Miatas;  one turbo, one supercharger and my V8).  The MXs did very well until I put my foot into it going around a corner

OK, I came to the party late, but there is something that might be a problem - the tire size is too small for the vehicle.

I think the vehicle originally called for a tire with a load index of 88 and the tires we are discussing are 84 (and they are extra load on top of this).

Overloaded (or underinflated) tires may fail and the results can be ugly.
