Oil Change Advise for all DIYers !!!
« Reply #20 on: June 26, 2005, 04:09:38 pm »
It is astounding to me how this guy has somehow become regarded as some kind of expert on car maintenance and repairs. For us regular posters it doesn't matter but if a lurker or newbie happens to take some of this "expert's" recommendations to heart they could really be in trouble. Luckily most of the information dispensed is of the vague and general sort that is really not harmful, or helpful.

He does an exceptional job of welcoming new posters but then again, I don't want the Walmart greeter fixing my car either.

Sterling you are becoming a offensive idiot. You don't have the right to slag me or anybody else on this Forum. You seem to want to continue with this crap which really shows how dumb you really are. I am sure most of the posters are sick of this already and your continuing to repeat this garbage is very sad on your part. I have forgotten more about engines then you will ever know. Ovr here's your chance to step in now. You don't like this behavior on here and I don't either.  I have nothing else ever to say to you Sterling as you are not worth it in my eyes.

I'll agree that you have apparently forgotten a lot.

I really don't care if you are offended or not. I certainly don't care if you respond to anything I write. I find your know-nothing posts about car maintenance offensive. There, are we even? Oh, and by the way, I have every right to question information that is posted by anyone that has no basis in fact and I will continue to do so.

"I have forgotten more about engines then you will ever know."

What an arrogant statement!!! You somehow seem to believe not only that your knowledge is supreme, but also, you are able to determine the extent of Sterlings knowledge AND his intellectual ability even though you do not know him. Only an arrogant (fill in the blank) would make such a claim. You have also made the same claim about another poster who is in the industry. I find your lack of respect for anyone who disagrees with you totally reprehensible.

Avtoller are you in the trade? I didn't think so by your comments either. You have no idea how many years I have worked in this field and also know nothing about me yet you slag me for doing the same to someone else who is doing it to me. You have done your fair share of cheap comments as well so I wouldn't talk if I were you. Now that you have started more trouble go ahead and ramble on. Give yourself another 5 while you are at it.

Barrie - I said above that I would say no more on this but this last outburst has caused me to post again. I gave avt a 5 myself as I happen to agree with what he said. I have known avt through another auto forum for several years, and he is an honest, intelligent gentleman. Incidently, this other auto forum has moderators and a lot of what gets said in personal ways on here would never be allowed over there. Personal attacks are not allowed and you would be warned, if it persists, you would be barred entry.

Whether or not avt is in the trade has nothing to do with what's going on here. This is about name calling, rudeness and lack of respect for other posters. I'm not in the trade either, but I know bad manners when I see (read) them. You say posters don't know your background but you certainly don't know theirs either; yet you presume to make statements that question their intelligence and understanding.

You really don't UNDERSTAND what we are talking about when we talk of being civil. You are only civil until someone disagrees with you and then you bad-mouth them. You say you don't like "this behavior on here", yet you are one of the first to call ppl names or that they are idiots.
I believe (and this will probably earn me your enduring dislike) that, based on over 2 years of participating on this Forum with you present, that you are one of the most uncivil posters on here. Furthermore, some of your posts are so one-sided that others just naturally rib you, or call you on the post, and your usually reaction is one of being defensive and angry. I have personally called your bluff on some posts, and have proven them inaccurate, or, at least, unable to be substantiated. You tend to ignore such evidence and press on as if nothing has happened. But it is not forgotten by others on here.

I have bitten my tongue (typing fingers) many times over your posts, but I've had enough. I'm sorry it's come to this, but I can't go on just ignoring your attitude on here. You have had verbal and unpleasant battles with at LEAST 6 or 7 posters on here in the past year. It just goes on, the only thing that changes is who you are fighting with this week.

You will likely never change and you certainly won't believe this post to be accurate. I will try to ignore your future outbursts, but at least you now have an honest assessment of how I feel about what's going on here.

I wish it could be otherwise. But it's not.

BTW - posting the smilie after each of your attacks does not diminish the words in the post.

Ovr its as simple as this, i don't know who has been giving you the 1 star posts but I do think now they are right. You have stated in the past that you would correct anyone who causes problems on here yet its a one way street with you. Only if its suits you it seems as I have only responded after being attacked by this one poster on at least 4 to 5 occasions. I don't give a dam for what you think any further  so get off your high horse and open you eyes instead of being totally one sided. I have even voted the ones away from you but will not do it any further. When the day comes that you are so perfect then you can throw the 1st stone.

Very well said Ovr. You've captured my thoughts (and I'm sure many others) exactly.

After looking over the posts here I'm not sure I should even weigh in with this, but back to topic. Two weeks ago I borrowed my neighbor's lawn mower to cut the jungle that was my lawn.He told me that all I had to do was fill her with gas and go; What he didn't tell me was that he had also drained the crankcase for the winter. So after 45 minutes of running an engine at WOT it didn't seize, lucky for me. And a good lesson to check the fluids before starting up.I realize that the tolerances for a Briggs and Stratton are a little looser than automotive engines(Except for Chevys...) but if we can't help each other here then what is the point? And flaming another poster for his/her opinion isn't going to solve anything.Maybe Barrie is right, that running an engine for that short a time won't hurt it. I routinely disconnect the primary coil and turn the engine over to fill the filter and get an accurate reading on the dipstick after an oil change.Do I think that getting every last drop of used oil is critical? Maybe on an F1 motor, but not in a passenger car. That's my opinion, and whether you agree or not is incidental.Prove to me the benefits and I might change how I do things. Call me an idiot without any constructive criticism and I'll tune you out. I think someone who blindly follows anyone's advice on any forum without taking it with a grain of salt is asking for trouble. . My $.02

That was a very poor example.  There is always a small resivor of oil in those junker Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engines and they lubricate themselves by a splash system and not oil pressure. It wasn't completely empty even though the neighbour "drained it" and BTW, the crank will break apart soon.

If I ran my Honda generator and outboard without oil they would seize in minutes, but they have low oil pressure shutdown switches built into them.
