Winter Tires for 2005 Mini Cooper
« on: June 23, 2005, 01:50:04 pm »
The Mini Cooper came with 195/55 16 run flat tires. My concern is that these tires will not work well in snow, and I want to save the alloy wheels. So can I buy 185/65 15" snow tires such as Toyo Proxes T1-R  and steel rims?  I seldom would be out of town during winter months. Where would I find the steel wheels to properly fit?The base Mini Cooper runs 175/65 15.

I am not sure about steelies, but there is plenty of choice for your size. BTW, T1R is not a winter tire, quite opposite... If you live in the GTA get something like Dunlop M3, Pirelli Winter Sport 210, or Hankook W300 (budget choice). If you get plenty of snow, you need more dedicated winter tires, such as Blizzak etc.

Vz64 is right...the T1-R wouldnt be very good in the snow...pure summer performance tire. The tires he suggest are all very good. We have had customers run 175/65R15, 185/65R15 and 195/60R15 sized winter tires. Size will often be dictated by the type of tires you choose. There are steels available for your application. They are a winter only item, but will be available closer to fall.

Pirelli 190 Snowcontrol is apparently specifically designed for the Mini Cooper in 175/65/15, you might want to take a look at that.

I drove my Cooper in the winter and recommend snows even for the city.  Unplowed streets proved to be a challenge at times especially if the road was on a bit of a slope.  I didn't have the car long enough to put on snows so was driving with all season stocks. (had issues with the vehicle  and knew I wasn't going to keep it).

Wow, was not expecting so many replys. As a senior my only winter driving is occasional at best, so I avoid the bad snow and unplowed streets. Actually all weather tires have worked fine on my last car, an Acura EL. We bought the Mini as a fun car to reclaim some of our lost youth, as I drove TR2 and MGA in early years and when the little people came along we had to go into mundane sedans. So, children, grandchildren are grown up and grampy and grammy have bought a Mini.  Here, in Halifax, the norm is to mount a winter tire on steel wheels for winter months to save the alloys and run flats for summer. My concern was in order to save money, but not sacrifice safety, that the winter tires be equivalent in size, overall diameter,  to the original 195/55 16, but on the less expensive 15" wheels. That seems to call for 185/65 15 and I believe 15/7" rims. Does this sound good? I like the sound of those Hankook W300 that VZ64 mentioned

Depending on the sizes you'll eventually end up getting, you could also consider some of these other highly regarded winter tires (the Hankook W300 is a good choice too):

- Pirelli Winter Carving
- Michelin X-Ice

Morty probably knows best the ones most suited to your winter conditions.

I have been looking at the TireTrend site with regards those Hankook W300 tires, and in the 195/55 15 size they are $94.97 each. However this site makes a reference to buying a wheel/rim combo package and I cannot seem to figure out how to get a price assuming I want these tires on steel rims to fit my Mini. Has anyone purchased through TireTrend online, how does it work, and what about delivery???

It is currently off-season for winter products. We will be updating the product availabilty as we get closer to the winter season. So, you can expect more winter offerings in early September. We will have the W300 available in the 185/65R15 and 195/60R15 sizes in the fall. We are currently offering limited sizes in our winter sale, however, that sale is ending June 30th. In your required sizing the only thing we have available is the 195/60R15 Hankook W440 and there is only 1  tire left.

For our winter packages we include the mounting hardware when required, free mounting and Road Force balancing.
