Who drives Buicks?

I thought GM once said Buick is targeting the 60+ retiring group.

All the Buick models are likely targeting seniors except one: Rendezous. They are very often often by the 30s crowd and soccer moms. It may be a hippier alternative to minivans. Also, the availability of versacrap also popularizes the vehicle.

What about Rainier? I am wondering what sort of people will likely buy one.

I haven't seen a Rainer on the road, however, I started to see Terraza which is driven by a soccer mom.

Its funny how the first post was kinda talking about how weird it is to see a Buick being driven by a younger guy...

I saw something that looked even weirder today. A brand new Altima 3.5, driving down the road at 35 kph with an old blue haired lady sitting 2 inches from the steering wheel with her head barely peeking over the instrument panel. Theres something you don't see every day

I drove to the Big City (Victoria) today and was amazed by some of the cars I saw. Only noticed one newish Buick, and the driver certainly did fit the profile - 70+. On the other hand, the treat of the day was the Lexus SC 430, top down, driven by an Asian gent, I would say about 115  years old. He was wearing a very nice tweed cap and a very satisfied grin. I think his mother was in the passenger seat. He was the only driver on the road who was anywhere near the legal speed limit.

Including you, Ross? You be getting a ticket, you don't slow down that hot-rod of yours..

There's got to be some neat, older cars in Alberni, probably squirrelled away in garages and only emerge on sunny days. That is certainly the case here, a nice sunny weekend day and the road is full of them.

Would not the Camry have the same age grouping as a Buick.

Camry's and in particular the newest version have sucked away many Buick owners.  I have seen 1 Allure on the road since they came out.  GM has one sitting right outside the front doors of the big theatre in Stratford.  It looks so out of place.

Regretfully, Buick is DOA like many of it's clients.

I owned a buick, minds has to be the worst car in the world, I brought almost new too. I spend so much money on fixing it. I almost got rid of it a while back, but I stop after I found honda were bring out a new civic. so it still sits outside my house leaking all over the driveway, with the paint and trim falling off.

After new Avalon got rave reviews, Toyota will starting to eat more into Buick's sales very soon.

Don't most of Victoria's residents fit that profile?

I'm a "go with the flow" kind of guy. I was impressed with some of the "motor sports" I witnessed though.

Most popular seemed to be "Xtreme Tailgating". As near as I could tell, it involved driving at 110 in an 80 zone. If the driver could see any road between his hood and the back of the car he was following, he was instantly disqualified.

Next there was the Lane-Change slalom. Points are determined by how many lane changes can be made in 1 km of rush hour traffic. I think bonus points MAY have been given if any progress was actually made.

The One-Block lurch had many entrants too. Winner is the person who can most quickly get from this light to the cars waiting for the light one block up.

Finally, there seemed to be a demonstration sport, Shoulder Driving. One waits for a long line of cars moving at less than 10 kph, drives past as many as possible until one finds someone stupid enough to let one rejoin the line-up. Most spectators did not seem impressed by this event.

I guess I've missed a lot living in small towns these last few years. I now understand the need to have high performance potential on tap at all times. I just couldn't compete.

I'm not sure. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

But come to think of it, I drove there to take my neighbour (75+) to visit her somewhat older friend. BTW, her friend's car was an early '50s Dodge in "well used" condition, so you may be right.

Good report on "How I spent Thursday with my 75 year old friend", Ross. It appears you had a ring-side seat for most of the events.

On a serious note, Kelowna is probably faster paced than the AV, but I'm always just a touch "rusty" when I first hit the Vancouver suburbs on a drive down there. It takes me a few kms and minutes to get the old adrenelin flowing and then the aggresion comes flooding back. It's called "defensive driving" in the Lower Mainland and if you fail to do it, you will passed endlessly, fingered many times and generally made to feel unwelcome on the road. Only the true seniors who have developed the art of ignoring the other drivers (as well as road signs, traffic lights and the general flow of traffic around them) are immune to the feeling. We have lots of those types up here also. Never been in an accident in their long life; but have caused 307 of them. Ah, what fun...

5 Ovr. Thanks, I needed that! Unfortunately, you are dead on!

In AV, EVERYONE seems to do the senior's driving thing (well, except me of course), but the roads are wide and there aren't many cars on the road at any time, so it all works out.

I think it also has something to do with having to "drive the Hump". In order to go from the Alberni Valley to the rest of the world, one needs to drive over a steep ridge/mountain pass called the Hump. Unfortunately for people in a hurry, the beautiful drive which goes through some old-growth forest and past a lovely lake is one-lane most of it's almost 40 km length. Almost all consumer goods are trucked in and logs and lumber (that which doesn't go by ship) has to be trucked out. My last 4 km yesterday (down the Hump) averaged about 25 kph. It's a great drive if you have the road to yourself, otherwise it can be a great aid to meditation. None of this really encourages development of high driving standards.

Nuffin wrong wif a long slow beautiful HUMP ta start off the weak_end...!!!!...is that cabbage I smell????.
Drove that way to Tofino in an old MGB when it was just a loggin road for most of the way...solitude and icy lake swim dips punctuated by
bat out of hell loggin' trucks...worth the price of admission tho'......was able to "camp" on the beaches then.....

Ah, yes, the big hills just before the Big A, I have driven over it a number on the way to Tofino etal. Didn't know it was known as the "Hump" tho, but makes sense. Actually, the Cathedral Grove and old growth forest there is one of the nicest spots on any VI hiways I've been on. It is so congested tho, that one always feels the need to pass on thru without holding up traffic. Need to have a "senior's moment" there and stop to smell the roses (or forest).

You know whats funny Honda is the old person car in Britain, when I see Honda just like when you see Buick I think of it as an old person car.
