Hmmmm both sides of my shield broke off my subaru, I just took the bolt out and put a big washer on. It's the alluminium and steel combo it oxidizes over time and the hole gets too big for the nut (at least mine was so).

Put a washer on and bolted her right back up :-)

With the exception of V6 products most Honda have the cat. convertor under the hood, close to the engine. Heats up quicker and less likely to rot.

That pic is the cat. If you can easily put a washer on it like Jamesbe suggests then do that. If that doesn't work out then rip it off.

The shield has nothing to do with how long long the converter might last. It is a heat shield to keep the high heat from the converter from igniting grass, etc. under the car.

That is my understanding as well.

Well, I did some Googling on the heat shield thing, and it looks like I was out to lunch on the keeping-heat-in-the-converter theory.

The US emissions regs changed in the late 90's and a lot of cars have the cat tucked up close to the exhaust manifold to get it to working temp faster .

My 2000 A4 1.8 was like that...I often wondered why the paint on the hood didn't catch on fire wuth the turbo and the cat right underneath it!

I don't know if you need to have it replaced but you're right. It's a Heat Shield. This generation of Honda products are notorious for this. 2 people in my office (One had a 98 Accord the other a 92 Prelude) had the exact same problem with the heat shields on their cars. One had it replaced.... $$$ and the other just left it. Up to you.

Honda is not the only company to have this problem as I have seen it happen on most brands. I would rather have it on there and not need it then need it and not have it. You never know when you will be parked in a grassy area and could accidently cause a fire. It does happen.

wow, talk about the beauty of the internet! I typed in my question, and my search brought me right to this thread...with all the answers i needed!

the cat. heat sheild on my acura 1.6el (that's been rattling for the last 3 months) finally fell off just last week. Prior to it falling off on it's own, the dealership, on my last servicing, noticed the rattling and recommended the following:

"Replace Catalytic Converter Shields - Rattling/Buzzing"
- $185.11 Parts, Labour & Taxes
!!!!

I've got the car going in tomorrow for other work, and i was trying to figure out how important the shield is to the car.

This thread has just saved me $185!! Thanks guys...

The Best Thing any car owner is to look for a Good Personal Garage That They Can Trust. My View Is To Look For The Garage That owns The Property. They Can't Just Up and Leave when You Need Them The Most. They are Always There When You Need them an give you good service. Stay The Heck Away From Crappy Tire If You Can help it.
