Honda Seatbelt Extension
« on: June 20, 2005, 03:13:33 pm »
They don't call me comfee for nothing.  I am a +++ size person.  I have a 1995 Honda Civic DX.  I love my little car but my seat belt is to short for this plus sized person.  I contacted Honda Canada Customer Service today, after being told by the dealership that Honda does not make seatbelt extension's, like other manufacturers do.  After listening to my problem the representative on the Customer Service line suggested that I buy another vehicle.  My Honda is a great car.  In excellent condition with just over 115,000 km's.  I have no intention of changing vehicles in the near future.  I know this is long winded but, I am looking for a compatible seat belt extension.  Can anyone help?

Have you tried auto parts stores and Canadian Tire? They may have an extension that would work for you. I'm just guessing here tho. Driving unbelted is not the answer obviously. My bro-in-law is a large man girth-wise, and he cannot fit in certain smaller cars and drives a Chrysler Concorde LX (or some such animal).

OVR50 - Yes I've tried Cdn. Tire and several other after mfg. parts suppliers, with no success. By the way I fit in the car just fine, I can do up the seat belt, but it seriously restrict's my movement making it unsafe to drive.  Possibly another mfg's belt extension might be compatible?

Hi Comfee, and welcome to the forum.  You can always try making a seat belt extension the way the car makers do it.  When belt extensions are available from some car makers, they consist of a female and male buckles attached with a short section of belt webbing.  Simply call a salvage yard and get a seat belt out of a 95 Honda and take it to a professional upholsterer who will have the equipment to properly sew the webbing to the buckles.  It might cost a few dollars but at least you'll be COMFEEEEEE.
If selling and fixing cars were easy, car makers would be doing it.

Would there be legal or insurance issues when using a homemade seatbelt extension.

There are legal implications in any vehicle issue according to the insurance industry but the defence is the 'home-made' extension is built the same way the car maker would construct it, and besides, I've lost count on the number of OEM seatbelt I've seen failed in my tenure.  In most cases the failures have been at the latch or at the webbing stitching.  But I'm sure all insurance companies would simply use the fact that the extension didn't come from Honda to deny any claim.  After all that's why they made record profits in Ontario last year.
