Tires are a wonderfull thing
« on: June 20, 2005, 09:37:21 am »
So, I've been running my winter tires ever since I got my subaru, I drive it summer and winter with them as I don't drive the car much in the summer anyways.

Well yesterday I decided to change my front tires to all-seasons since I had them, figuring it would improve my braking in the rain and the squirleyness during high speed braking.

Well wholly SHMOLLY!  My steering is 100 times tighter and more accurate now and this is at low speed!  I couldn't stop playing with my steering wheel it felt so nice and direct.

I knew tires made some difference but the difference is HUGE, glad I changed :-)

I've never heard it referred to as a 'steering wheel' before...

I noticed the lighter steering on my wife's car after putting the all seasons back on.

Why change only two tires?  Wouldn't there be an imbalance in the the way the front and back ends handle?

You really shouldn't mismatch the tires like that on a Subaru.  It's less important in the summer than in the winter, but you run the risk of binding your differential because you're creating a permanent traction difference with the different tires.

There are those here who claim that if you replace one tire on your Subaru, you have to replace all four...and then there are those who put summers on the front and winters on the rear....I'm glad there's a diversity of style here.

Well I would put 4 all-seasons but I do not have rims or tires.  Size difference is very minimal, I don't think binding in the front will occur, as it is not as crucial as the rear.  It's almost pointless for the few 100 km I will drive anyways.
