Tires for 2001 4Runner
« on: June 15, 2005, 10:58:43 pm »
Hi all,

I am about to replace my stock Dunlop Grandtrek tires.  I am having trouble deciding what to replace with.  Leaning toward the Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO just because they look great and several people I have talked to said its a good tire.  Its a bit expensive though is there a good tire out there that has the same type of aggressive look but not as $$$.  Thinking about the Yokohama Geolander AT as well.  what options do I have Any thoughts from fellow SUV drivers.
thanks

No first-hand experience, but I've heard good things about the Yokohamas.

You might also want to consider the tried-and-true BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO. I put a whole bunch of pavement miles on those over the winter and was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting a rough and noisy ride, but they were actually quite smooth and quiet. They also seem to last very well, and offer decent snow traction to boot.

No first-hand experience here either, but the Revo's generally get rave reviews from SUV owners.

Have a look at www.yotatech.com's forum if you need any 4Runner specific info.

What size are you running on your '01 4-Runner? 15" or 16"?

Thanks guys.
Morty, I am running stock Dunlop grandtreks size 265/70R16.
My wife wants to make sure we get something safe(for the kids) but we both agree that we like the look of agressive looking tires.

I'm running 245/70R16 Michelin LTX MS on my 2000 Ranger 4x4 (about 70,000 km) and I'm very happy with them.  Decent handling, very good wet traction/handling and they're wearing very well.  Similar to the Michelin Cross Terrain SUV.  I can't compare them to any other tire, because it's the only tire I've had on the truck.  I notice that Kumho makes a 'performance' truck tire (ECSTA STX).  I would look at them too.  I have Kumho MXs on my V8 Powered Miata and I like them a lot (great price too).

On the 4-Runner I would definitely recommend staying with a P-metric tire for ride comfort and drivability. If you like the more aggressive style...tires to look at would be the mentioned Bridgestone Revo AT and also look at the Toyo Open Country AT. Both very nice tires. Unfortunately the Geolander AT does not come in the required size, otherwise I would normally throw that in as well.

If you dont mind a stiff ride, consider the BFG All-Terrain KO. With a bit of warning though; this tire is much stiffer and on the 4-Runner the vehicle will drive quite different as it is fairly light.

Here are a bunch of options:
