Speaking of temperature affecting transmission shifting, I have noticed this on the Optra as well as a Safari I had.  I live very close to the highway and when I merge on in the morning, the car does not shift into overdrive for some time (2-3min.).  I believe this is temp. related as it only happens in the winter at lower than -7C.  As ShadowDog says it isn't an issue and I have noticed it on other GM/Chev products.

I would think that the speed has to be up to around 100 klms on average for most trannies to stay in 4th gear or overdrive persay. You do have to reach a certain speed and RPm to keep it locked up. If you are not able to obtain that type of speed when you 1st get on the highway then maybe thats why it dosen't go into 4th for so long. Also if you have more then 75,000 miles on the fluid and filter you are do for a service flush which will help maintain the shift pattern and the whole tranny much better. Depending on your driving style and location you should flush between every 50,000 and 80,00 miles or so. The tranny will last much longer when looked after this way.  :)
