OPTRA TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS
« on: June 13, 2005, 05:56:00 pm »
Our Optra Wagon is new- less than a month since we leased and it's in the shop with transmission problems.  It's an auto and it seems to be stuck in a higher gear.  Been waiting nearly 4 days now and the service people don't know what to do since GM has not called them back with the proper fix.  Apparently, this is not the first car to go through our dealership with the problem.  In fact, there's another wagon (LS models) with the same problem there right now.  While my service rep has been outstanding so far, I would have appreciated the information from my salesperson when I asked her if there were any issues with the Optra vehicles.  Instead, she just ranted about every other car we were considering and assured me that the Optra was issue-less.  Now I'm ticked off and can't wait for the lease to end... in 4 years!

HeyThere, HiThere, HoThere.  :-)

Too bad about the problems you're experiencing.  You stated you asked the salesperson if there were any issues with the car....did you honestly expect her to say "the tranny's crap and the engine is gutless and the competition costs more but is worth the extra money?"

While it's never a pleasant feeling to have a brand new car crap out on you, atleast the service department is doing what it can to try and resolve this for you.  Did you get a loaner or atleast some rental car at GM's cost?

That really sucks that you've experienced a major issue so shortly after getting your new Optra.  It does sound like you are dealing with a good dealership, which can make all the difference in getting warranty issues addressed with the manufacturer.

It sounds likely they will order in a new transmission for your vehicle - I've seen that done before on other makes with the same issue.  Hopefully their fix solves it once and for all.

I guess you can be glad it's on a lease!

The service department has been excellent so far.  It's frustrating that they don't know what to do yet since GM is not getting back to them, but I understand the system.  I'm still ticked that my salesperson wasn't honest with me (she mispoke about several other things that aren't worth mentioning).  She was in fact, generally uninterested in the whole transaction- I know I could have asked for another sales rep, but in the end I just wanted to get the deal done.

I tried Alldata to see if there are any technical service bulletins out pertaining to your car.  The Optra is a Canadian only vehicle, so I checked into the Suzuki Reno, which is the identical USA only vehicle.  The only TSB out on it so far pertains to the Electronic Control Module.  Unlikely related to the transmission (though remotely possible I suppose).

At least the tools you have in the present situation are there.  Could you imagine what it would be like if the service department was really crappy?  Next time you go to purchase a new vehicle be sure not to use her and make sure you tell all your friends not to go to her.  That way she can't pull the wool over other peoples eyes.  Just a thought :-)  I hope that this will be the only issue you have with it.

Heythere Having a bad tranny in a new car is not enough reason to call a car crap. Even tho I understand your frustration with this problem I am sure they will have it fixed shortly. This is not the 1st car to have a tranny problem reported here as it happens to all makes at one time or another. This is the 1st Optra complaint we have heard tho regarding the trannies.  As far as the Saleslady involed she should learn more about the products in the marketplace before she says too much as that is an injustice to all others named. I would just take her experience in stride and work on a resolve for yours. GM has a very good reputation for their auto trannies and will have a fix very soon I am sure.

Barrie1 , I doubt the Optra has a true GM tranny but rather something made in Korea.

"This is the 1st Optra complaint we have heard tho regarding the trannies"

Definitely NOT true.

Look to the "My Optra is a lemon thread" - you were even told at that time that the Optra transmission is a Daewoo, not a GM.

"Having a bad tranny in a new car is not enough reason to call a car crap."

Having a car in the 1970s rust out isn't either, but it doesn't stop some from having a permanent hate.

Personally, I think having a transmission go after 4 months on a new car IS a reason to call it crap; but then, I once got a Neon as a rental with 100 km on it, and the transmission went kablooey 10 km after we left the airport.  I still think Neons are crap.

But then again, maybe your definition of "crap" is different from mine.

It's not the design or the car that's crap... it's the quality control at the factory that built the transmission that's crap.  PS.  I agree with Tenpenny... Neons are "crap".  I don't dare badmouth any GM product though.  I don't want to start a war.

I'm not quite sure here why any pro-GM fan would defend the Daewoos?? Obviously, GM bought the Daewoo firm in its entirety and rebadged the current production. It's not a GM tranny in the Optra or the other Daewoos. I can see defending GM if it were a GM tranny but it's NOT. The only thing GM about the Optra is the badge they put on it. So, as a GM fan, why would you care if Optra are not so good and the trannies may be suspect?

I don't understand this logic at all??

Someone mentioned something about the Electronic Control Module above - thanks for doing that digging.  My service consultant also mentioned that this might be the problem but it ultimately has something to do with the transmission getting stuck in 3rd or 4th gear.  And by the way, I've had the car for 4 weeks, not 4 months.

Thanks for the good input everyone.

I feel for you.  It's never a good thing to get a new car only to see it go south on you.  It should not matter if it is a major thing or a minor thing, all cars should be at a higher standard by now.

This can probably be blamed on GM management.  Re-badging an under-engineered, poorly designed and built vehicle for an attempted quick gain in sales numbers.
