Installing a sunroof
« on: June 11, 2005, 10:20:03 pm »
I would really like to put in a sunroof in the Integra I just bought.  It's an old car so I don't want to spend a ton of money.  Years ago I sawed a hole in the roof of a 1 year old Rabbit and put in a pop up unit (I still can't belive I had the guts to cut a hole in the roof of a almost new car but it worked well, anyway) I talked to a local winsheild guy and he says he doesn't even sell the pop up units any more as you can't get any good ones.  Anyone have any ideas?

You can pay a professional to install one or you can try to head to the local junk yard and pull a pop out one out of a wrecked car.

Just cut the HOLE and use BIG ROLL of SARAN wrap in the back seat !!!!..
Seriously tho' I'd be worried  about a  do it yourself job weakening the structure...and heaven forbid you had a roll over and the Insurance gods found out........!!!!!!

This one is right up there with the A/c in a Hyundai.

With the official kit, no problem as the surround will have been designed to put the strength back that you are taking out.  If you do this yourself you will want an absolutely level floor and NOT to climb over the car or open the doors while it is sitting with a great big piece of metal missing from the roof.. and you'll have to replace the headliner and so on.

with an aftermarket one...I wouldnt even try it on a modern lightweight unitbody although I am sure that a professional shop would do a good job... defined as no rattle, no leaks and no wind roar.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
