I am looking onto buying a used 91 dodge shadow. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any problems with this type of car or anything, and what insurance would be like (high, low). I was also wondering if anyone knew of a website that would give me a quote on insurance.

Insurance should be cheap.
Head gaskets go easily on them.  My dad has a 92 with 200,000 kms.  He recently did the head gasket for the 2nd time.  Other wise it has been a good car...he's owned it for 4 years now.

I had an 88 Plymouth Sundance as a winter car. Had 200,000 kms on it when I sold it some 9 years ago. It ran very well except for that pesky underside rusting out.

I haven't heard anything bad about these vehicles.  A friend of mine had a Shadow with turbo.  It was a fun car and great to drive.  Why did they stop making them anyways?

They were replaced by the Neon, weren't they?

My dad's 92 has a nice paint/primer paint scheme going on.  He says the paint's coming off because it is such a fast car.    However, the car has little or no rust.  He uses it to tow his 14' aluminum boat, and a 4'x8' utility trailer in addition to regular driving duties.

They should have kept the Shadow.  :-)  Good things have come out of the Neon though.

Look for cracks in the rear axle piece.

Head gaskets were a sore point as mentioned, if it was replaced already you're in luck, the replacements tend to last the rest engines life. Rust was the real killer of these cars, especially in around the rear shock towers. These cars and the K-cars they replaced along with the Neon/SX2.0 that replaced them were designed with 2 things in mind; 1. Provide cheap, reasonably reliable transportation and be cheap to fix when they do break down and 2. to get Chrysler out of Bankruptcy. They accomplished both well. They lack the refinement of a Honda Civic, but tend to be around longer at a far lower cost to maintain.

One other thing, How would I go about finding the black book value of a car?
