Regular gas for 1.8T Jetta.
« on: June 08, 2005, 11:36:12 pm »
I filled up the tank with regular last week to see what would happen.
I filled it up with 91 before come home tonight, it doesn't feel any different to me.
Is it bad to run a 1.8T on regular in the long run?

What does your owners manuel say? If you were only doing hiway driving between fillups most engines would be fine. Some of the other owners will be along to give you their views shortly I am sure.

Most turbos require 91 but, Barrie's right, check the Manual.

I believe that your 1.8T is the same engine inside my 2002 A4. My owner's manual states that regular (87) gas can be used without any harm but that it will result in a slight loss of power.

The 1.8T requires 91.  Volkswagen is just being disingenuous in an effort to move them.

When you use low octane gas in that motor the computer will detune the engine, but to receive the imputs to trigger the detuning the motor is suffering.  In addition, the mileage will decrease.  It is of zero gain to cheap out.  That is why it is dicey to buy premium gas cars from used car lots without first talking to the previous owner as to get a feel if they were cheapo owners.

You can use regular when premium is not available.

HOWEVER, I would NOT use regular in the 1.8T, especially if you drive anything but grandma acceleration and speed.

The car wasn't designed for that in mind - you'll get reduced performance and the possibility of some long-term wear/premature component failure.

I myself have noticed my 1.8T running much smoother and powerful with sunoco 94.  For some reason esso 91 seems a bit weaker and rougher, and that is premium too.  I believe some guys on vwvortex.com dynoed a 1.8T with regular gas and then with premium.  Regular netted something like 160hp, premium was 185hp (not sure the exact figures).

A 10 cents/L difference isn't that much.
I'm more concerned about the long term wear on the engine.

If it doesn't hurt the mechanics and only requires a different push of a button at the pump to save money, why wouldn't I do it, Saffy?

Other than that, I will be asked this same question from customers in the future.
Telling them "premium is recommended" would not be sufficient, if I have previous consumers feedback and tested it myself, I would be much more credible.

No offense intended Jscc, but how could anything you might say be more credible than what VW has written in the owner's manual?

"premium is recommended" is vague.
It doesn't mention the disadvantages if regular was used.
If it said "premium is a must", then I wouldn't be posting this thread.

Since when do Germans politely say "recommended"?

No explanation vill be given.  If you must ask, you do not deserve zis car.

I follow the logic that if it says premium is recommended, I buy premium. Once again, it's not a lot of money over the year.

"If you must ask, you do not deserve zis car"

Imagine me saying that to a customer.
My goal is to sell them a car not make them run out of the dealership feeling pissed or talked down.

You're probably on to something there, Jscc. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the marketing guys at VW who are responsible for the "recommended" wording in the manual.

If the engineers had been in charge, the manual would probably read "required", instead.

Don't want to lose any sales to the cheapskates

Well, anyways, it also states:

115HP engines
minimum octane rating of 87 recommended

180HP/174HP/200HP
minimum octane rating of 91 recommended

Notes
.Do not use any fuel with octane ratings lower than 87 AKI or 91 RON otherwise expensive engine damage will occur.
.Do not use leaded gasoline!

Ok, 91 only from now on. I plan to keep my car in good shape.
