How much to fix a flat?
« on: June 06, 2005, 11:20:24 pm »
Nothing too tricky - just a simple nail through the tread.

It's been a few years for me, but the last time I think I paid 10 or 12 bucks. Today I paid $19.25 to plug a nail hole in my Kumho 712s.

As well, the shop didn't even have to jack up the car & remove/replace the tire. I did that myself - all I did was hand them the tire, they just fixed it & handed it back to me.

Seems a little steep to me, but maybe this is the going rate now?

Sounds like a fair price to me. I would say around $25 for a performance tire is normal.

Today I paid $19.25 to plug a nail hole in my Kumho 712s.

If they dismounted the tire from the rim and patched it from the inside with a "tire patch" and then rebalanced the rim then you got a very good price.  In my area that costs $25.

If they simply inserted a plug from the outside without dismounting the rim then you got burned and a poor patch job.

I don't know what the case is across Canada but any place I worked we always used the uni-seals;which are a combination plug/patch.
The tire must be dismounted and prepped for the repair.Afterwards we always re-balanced.
To me you shouldn't do any less for a good repair and $25.00 would be fair if you got this type of service.

I had two nails in a single tire recently.  I watched the guy do it.  Certainly took him 15 minutes or so to prep and patch the tire, and rebalance.

Cost was $25, as they only charged me for one nail.

The summer before last I had a nail.  Took it to the tire shop with tire still on vehicle and he charged me $10 to pull the nail out and plug it.

The tire guys I deal with fix any flat for free if the tires were bought there. Even on tires not bought there, a few months ago I had a slow leak in one of the Bullitts tires, and they fixed it for free (and actually found a second roofing nail in the tire and fixed that one also). OTOH, $25 seems OK to me for work done at a stranger shop ie. you just walk in off the street.

A potentially dangerous way to repair a tire.  At high speeds, what exactly would hold a plug like that in?

A repair from the inside is done much differently eliminating this worry.

I'm not sure how it's done but it worked.  I don't have the car anymore so I'm not all that worried.

Although it's good to balance your wheels once in a while, I don't see why they have to do it  after repairing a tire.

The tire was taken off the rim & fixed from the inside. Doesn't look like it was rebalanced, though - just marked so that it could be reinstalled in the same position on the rim. Anyway, it seems to be vibration-free at speeds up to 120 km/h.

Hmmm... I must have just imagined (or maybe wished) that it only cost 10 bucks last time.

Let's see - the cost of the ruined tire, the body damage when the tire spredded and scored up the painted parts, the wheel when the tire blew and the wheel hit the pavement - that otta do it??

Yes, Snowy, add this thing up for us so we're guessing blindly as above.

my guess is, Snowman got an irrepairable flat that required him to buy a new tire.  However, since rutro requires that all 4 tires have the same diameter, the combination of 3 old tires and 1 new won't work, being AWD and all, it would damage the drivetrain.

Hey, Crolly, good answer and the right one. Of course, given enough time and few hints, I think I could have got it too - well, maybe not..

No problemo, you could use 4 new ones anyway, right Snowy?
