So for the last couple of days my car has been misfiring when accelerating and last night the car almost stalled and the check engine light started flashing. I have changed the plugs and wires 9 months ago and changed water pump /timing belt 1 yr ago. People have told me it could be my gas filter i dont want to go the the vw dealership have had bad experience can someone help me out...

Have you serviced the fuel filter/changed it? Milage? Engine type? Year?

it a 99 new model 2.0L 88.990 km and have not changed the fuel filter.

Plug wires, cap & rotor & plugs. Replace all of the above, common issue on these engines for them to carbon track the cap & ground out in the plug end of the wires.
