Question for HondaSalesGuy
« on: June 05, 2005, 10:26:11 pm »
I hope you'll be able to answer this form me.  Why is the V6 Accord engine more expensive to service than the V4?  Other than the 2 extra cylinders I'm wondering if there are major differences between the two.  (I'm referring to my two vehicles for your reference).

Did you swap a VFR800 engine into your LX?

My guess is that it's cheaper to service the LX because of all the extra room under the hood.

Can you define the extra cost on the service so folks will have a better understanding on which costs you mean. Please. Oil Changes, tuneups ?

Sure.  Both cars have stock motors.  Both are VTecs.  Oil changes are the same but the actual maintenance programs that Honda has set up for each are different.  IE.... Brake inspections, Motor stuff.  You know... stuff.... air filters, belts, coolant, tran and brake fluids, tie rod inspections.  Suspension.

If you go to Honda's website you can find a maintenance schedule for each model.

Honda figures if you can afford to spend the extra money on the six, you can afford higher service costs!

Seriously, the engine bay is probably the main reason.  I'd bet many things are tougher to get to.  On models I've owned where different engines were available (on my C-Class, you could get an I-4, V-6 or V-8) the smaller engines offered much more room in the engine bay and servicing many items was much easier.
No place I'd rather be...

Johngen: How is the Subaru's flat 4 to work on? I just realized I have never had an up  close look at this unusual engine. Based on your avatar it looks like the plugs/I. manifold must be sandwiched by the front suspension?

John, that answer might be tongue in cheek, but probably not far off in reality.

Real reasons that might be offered, including the space reason already mentioned:
1) More oil in the pan (hey dealer bulk oil is expensive, those extra 2 litres is easily worth $20)
2) 2 more spark plugs
3) other parts may be "bigger" or more expensive: air filter, oil filter, dual exhaust system, etc.
Oil obsessed...

The plugs on the rear bank of cylinders on a transverse mounted V6 can be a real b*tch to get at.

Ericthejet, I believe that's what SirCivic's comment above was referring to.  Is the VFR800 a V4?  I know some old Honda bikes used to have 'em.

Honda made a 500cc, 750 and 1000cc Interceptor bike which started in 1984.  Only the 800 is still around, called the VFR.  It was a V4, early ones had cooling issues(heat) and early cam wear. Honda also has the ST1300 V4, mounted sideways, great sport, great distance bike and a ton-o-power too.  I guess you could jam one into a Honda car....Huummmm sounds like a project.

Thanks for your input everyone.  My question has been answered.  I wonder what top speed would be if a ST1300 V4 was jammed into an Accord Sedan?  :-)  Maybe 40KM/H?

A few years back some fellas in Quebec fit a Kawasaki 1100cc/155hp inline 4 cyclinder into a "LeCar".  They were afraid to put it "to the mat".  It looked scary and took off like a rocket.  I have also seen a video of a Suzuki 750cc 4cycl jammed into a modified go-cart.  It burns it's tires off in about 10 minutes.  Can you say powerslides?
