Used car dealer feedback. OK to ask here?
« on: June 04, 2005, 07:53:02 pm »
I'm in BC currently scoping out a hard-to-find car in Toronto via AutoTrader. Is it OK to solicit customer's experience with a particular used car dealer (unnamed for now) here? Not sure what the protocol or forum rules are here. Thanks.

Advertising is not allowed but I would think comments on a particular dealer would be OK. Just my opinion; others may disagree.

Ya, go ahead.  You can get really screwed by using the wrong re-seller in TO.

I would say if posters have had personal (good or bad) experiences with a dealer, then it would be OK to share.

Wow, thanks for the replies. The dealer's name is Nubridge Auto Center on Weston Rd. and Steeles. Thanks for your feedbacks!

Is it normal for used car dealers to charge PDI? Nubridge charges $300 which they say covers Ontario certification and emissions. Their admin fee is $175. What are your opinions? Thanks!

Personally, at a Used dealer, I would pay neither. Pay the Ontario costs directly. But my advice may be off, as I have not dealt with a used dealer for a long time. Good luck.

I bought a used vehicle last month from a dealer.  I paid GST+PST+$100 for plates.  Since my birthday was only a few months away, the dealer only needed $50 for plates+sticker and put in $50 worth of gas.  He gave me the receipts from the MTO and Sunoco when I came to pick up.

I know a lot of used car dealers will say their "fees" are not negotiable.  I suggest not arguing over the line items.  Figure out what you would like to pay out the door and make them a final out the door offer.  I'm guessing you don't need this vehicle right away, it is not a hot mover and it is a "summer car."  Worse case scenario is you will have to wait till January before acquiring that vehicle at considerably less than today's price.

The dealer could bury those costs into the price which is what most did or maybe still do. For some reason though he wants you to know that these are costs that he has to incur. Are they fair is another matter.

Safety and emissions S/B less than $100 - which means he wants $200 to go the licence bureau and change the title. That seems too much and would be an item I would negotiate.

Thanks for your replies. What are your thought on www.carproof.com - sort of like a more comprehensive CarFax for Canadian vehicles?

If indeed they do have access to each provincial database then it's probably worth the money.

I don't remember but is that $24.95 for each vin search? Probably. I think I would like to have that verified by the province to see if they are giving out data that I thought might be classed as confidential.

Maybe cars are different and there is no personal history so perhaps ok. If not it's a cheap way for crooks to find out all about a car they are considering boosting.

Nubridge is just one of a 100 ordinary used car sellers in the Great Metro Toronto area with all the usual BS and cars with incomplete service histories.

I don't know what you have in mind, but a place were all the vehicles are semi mint is called Legacy Motors in Toronto.  Phone up and ask for the owner directly as to avoid sales commission if he even has a sales person. He didn't when I've been there.  His prices are at the higher end, but you get what you pay for.
