Simple question on a thermostat
« on: June 03, 2005, 07:38:33 pm »
My 2001 Nisan Sentra is in need of a new thermostat (I think) - I want to confim this. The heat gauge does a little song and dance when it's hot and I need to use the A/C. It doesn't get to the critical mark, but it goes up and down. Most of the time, it's normal but it does this jumping around.

The coolant is fine and the radiator level is full.

Is my self-diagnosis accurate?

Hi Super, Welcome to the forum.  I doubt if your thermostat is the cause of the dancing temp gauge.  A thermostat is simply a dam that restricts coolant flow during warmup and thereby redirects the flow to the block and heater core passages only, avoiding the rad.  When the vehicle first reaches operating temp, the stat opens and is out of play for the rest of the drive.  The first thing I'd check is the coolant level, if it is slightly low it would account for your temp peaking high during AC use.  It may be time to flush and replace the coolant.  The worse case scenario is that your Nissan is experiencing the onset of head gasket failure.  If the symptoms persist after a flush and refill and no external leaks are found you may need to have some testing done to determine if the head gasket is on the way out.  Don't forget to check the radiator fins, if they get blocked with accumulated debris it affects the heat exchange capabilities of the unit.  Also check to see if your electric rad cooling fan is coming on.  It should come on during AC use regardless of eng temp and should operate with the AC off when the eng temp peaks.
If selling and fixing cars were easy, car makers would be doing it.

Very good answer Ex! I got the same problem with my Discovery in Saudi (+40 oC and more). The garage guy changed the thermostat, the radiator but the problem remained!! The headgasket was OK (thanks God). At the end, the garage guy was thinking that the problem might be electronic program related!? It was one year after September 11, it was becoming really too HOT overthere, I sold the car and moved away...

I really hope it's just the thermostat, as the coolant levels are fine. It has been usually warm for the last few days and the problem persists even with the A/C shut off.

Thanks.

If you have 2 electric fans then usually one will be on with the A/c on if you are under 50km/h and the other is the main fan.

It may be that the sensor is failing... this happened to me one very hot day the temp gauge started wandering around  between HOT and cool. This was on an Audi and the dealers computer immediately diagnosed as failing sensor

I hope not - I've replaced enough of those stupid things, already. I'll have to have it checked out next week, as I have to go on an 10-hour drive and wouldn't want this to be an issue that far from home.....Wouldn't the sensor just quit, all of a sudden, and the gauge would be always high and the fan running?

Duck,

How was Saudi? Very very different! Very very religious. Of course it is the desert, the place to have an SUV (with AC) and doing off-road!
The people were very nice, and very generous! Many many poor people there too! Very little to do for the young people. Not too much hope too.

They drive like crazy though! Doing U-turn is a must overthere the way the streets were made. When I was there (2001-02) the gaz was about 1/3 of the price in Canada.
And off-course there is (or was)many expatriates to do all the work. But Saudi people want to be more and more involved, get good education and actively participate. That will take a lot of time...
It was a great experience! September 11 and the Irak war have changed everything...

The cooling system may have air trapped in it also.  Start the car, pop the hood and observe.  Make sure that your cooling fan is cycling on /off.  I would start with a coolant change and a new thermo.  If your coolant level does not change it may not be the head gasket leak.

Very long story but in brief, I would never agree that a moron has to kill so far more than 200,000 people (including elderly, women and children) to remove Saddam and his followers. Never!
By the way, did you live too in the Middle-East as I did? If not...

Interesting thread hijack.

I think it's just a dodgy stat, as I'm sure I'd have other issues if the head gasket was cooked. It's a little cooler, today, and we'll see how the thing works.

I had two new O2 sensors installed a week ago - any chance there is some correlation, here?
