I have a 12 disc CD changer in my truck (it came with it), but it doesn't work.  When I push tape or CD, it says "NO DJ"  Can someone please help me.

Are you trying to play country music? It appears to me that your truck is trying to tell you that you are certainly no DJ, and should probably go buy some new music.

Seriously though, I'm guessing that maybe it's trying to tell you that you have a Disc Jammed. Do you have an owner's manual? That might give you some ideas.

If you want to post some more details (make, model & year of truck), that might help. When you say the CD changer came with the truck, do you mean it was installed by Ford (or whoever) at the factory? If it's an aftermarket unit that was installed by a previous owner, the brand of changer would be good to know as well.

I know absolutely nothing about CD changers, so I'll leave it at that...

Ok, I have a 97 Explorer Eddie Bauer. The stereo is a Ford installed stereo ( I believe)  I purchased the truck used and the stereo works great, but the CD says "No DJ" and the tape says the same when I tried to push that button.  I am getting frustrated.

Sorry, I know I'm not much help seeing as I don't know much myself.

Can you load and unload disks from the changer?  I assume it plays the radio without problem?  Is there a brand name or model number on the changer (which I pressume is in the back of the truck or under the front seat)?

I can't get the changer to unload the disks anymore. It's just sitting there with 12 in it.  I can get it out if I used force, probably, but I didn't want to try it unless it was absolutely necessary.  Yes, it is in the back.  I don't have the truck here, but I will on Monday to get the brand name or model number.

Ah, the magic of Google. It appears that you are not the first to have this problem.

Have a look at this link. Maybe it will work for you too.

OK, I see from your post above that you can't even get the CD magazine out. Oh well, I'm out of ideas. Good luck...

Sorry, one more quick idea: why not just phone a Ford dealer & see what they have to say? I'm sure thay've come across this problem before.

The problem is that your HU (head unit) is telling you that there is no DJ. I may be a little fuzzy on the details but in the late nineties Ford was secretly using non-unionized squirrel monkeys to help shave some costs. Rather than using a conventional disc changer system the Ford accountants found that by using a squirrel monkey located in the trunk they could install a single CD player in the guise of a changer. The monkey would react to a small electrical impulse sent from the HU and change discs. There are three possible causes to your monkey not functioning:

1)Your exhaust system has developed a leak and your monkey was overcome by carbon monoxide.

2)Buzz Hargrove has swayed the monkeys to organize and they are now part of the CAW. Your monkey is on vacation and then is taking a leave of absense due to "stress"

3)In its latest effort to cambat the imports Ford has secretly recalled the monkeys. They will be redeployed assembling Ford 500's.

Ahh, so that's how they work. Sounds like a good time to upgrade to a rhesus!

There is a special service tool which you can either borrow or purchase that will allow for the removal of the head unit.Heck you could even make one they are quite a simple device.
Once removed you send the unit to a audio repair facility (see labels on back of unit for manf).
They will remove and return all the discs for you.
You will have to ask what your options are:
repair your unit or exchange for a remand unit and of course the costs of either option.
If you are really lucky a local audio repair facility might be able to help but it's usually quicker and more cost effective to simply get an exchange unit.
If that becomes too costly then replace with aftermarket stereo.
The old one will make a good door stop.
