Hey everyone,

I was reading my local neighbourhood newspaper and I saw advertised a new 2005 Sunfire for $9982. I know these cars are 20 years old in terms of the platform and are very poor in comparison to the competition. But thats a great price, I think its worth it. Is it?

If you can't afford something else and want a somewhat roomy 4dr with some guts, why not?

They're a proven vehicle going for cheap. Hard not to consider it.

That's cheaper than a local dealer advertised for $11k last month. If I am doing those local courier (not UPS, DHL, Purolator types of large firms) who earns only 30 cents per letter, I would lease a Sunfire/Cavalier with June's additional $1k rebate and further negotiation for 0 down/security deposit.

Thats an extremely good price for a very good car. We bought one new in1996 and it served us really well until the fall of 2000 when it took a head-on on the Hi-way and was totalled. My oldest Daughter was driving it and walked away after the crash as the entire front end was really twisted. The cabin held up extremely well as the impact was at around 50 MPH. She suffered only a sore face from the airbag and a slightly bruised knee. This car had over 80,000 klms on it at that time and had been a cheap car to own as they only had put new tires on it and nothing else.

O my God, you had to new tires on a GM after a 80,000km, if that Toyota it would still be good for another 100,000 km before it need new tires!

To knock any car over the stock tires that only lasted 80,000 klms is ridiculous. Almost all of the new cars come with cheaper tires then what they will be replaced with. Read the other threads and learn something about the tires that come on all makes and why most people are never really Happy with them before you slag any product. Tires do not make the vehicle that much better unless the owner puts them on. Many folks change out their tires when they are new as they are not to their liking.

I think that was sarcasm, Barrie.  One of my detectors is going off, so it's either sarcasm, or my gaydar is acting up again.

I personally would invest the money into a used vehicle, but hey, that me.

If the car appeals to you, then go for it. The price is great.

No. There are tons of them on the road. In fact, there is more Cal/Sunfire on the road than Civics and Corollas, so why would you want such a commom car? Go for a Lancer! Fire sale of Mitsu is also on.

Lancers may be going cheap but I don't think they are under $10K... If you don't expect much out of a Sunfire you'll probably be fine. The technology dates back to the Reagan years but for that kind of money, you could drive it for a 3-5 years and treat it as a disposable car. If you get anything for it after that consider it a bonus.

They are pretty much a hateful car to drive though IMO...

Wasn't this brought up in another thread a while back? IIRC, there was some kind of catch to this deal, and the car would actually wind up costing you $13-14k. Grossly inflated fees/freight/PDI charges or something like that, maybe?

Also seen lots of dealers advertising the 2005 2-door SUVs (Blazers or Jimmys?) for $18,995.

Neither are for me, but I do like the idea of selling a brand-new, 20-year-old car for dirt cheap. Wish BMW could have done that with the 3-series.

The $9900 price will likely be for CASH buyers only, no 0% attached to that. And they will likely attempt to recoup some money with admin fees, etc., or to upsell you to a $14K car with A/C and Auto. Either way you get what you pay for. I can't imagine someone driving a Sunfire for 5 years, we have had people trying to trade in 18 month old Cav/Sunfires for years, problem is they usually are upside down by $6 - $8K!!!

It's depend on your luck.

I bought my 93 Cavalier in 93 (same as Sunfire), my uncle said that this car sucks and last 5 years. Now, 12 years, I still drive to work everyday and every time I see my uncle and he said "you are lucky"

12 years spent driving a Cavalier? Don't know if I'd call that lucky!

(In hindsight - no offense intended to your choice of wheels, Thang. Just poking a little fun.)

Mitsu_fan, go for it, you can't go wrong with that kind of price. It's brand new with warranty. There're tons of later model sunfires rolling around and I haven't seen one in the ditch. Don't fuzz about that 'possible' reliability concerns. Take it out and drive like a man. Although the sissy interior quality concerns may upset some buyers, you've got yourself the most fun-to-drive and peppy car in the compact segment, you bet. And you won't look sorry chauferring your girl friend in it. good luck
