To be honest, I think they changed it for some of the Western markets, just because "Midship Runabout" doesn't exactly sound cool?

C'mon, guys, anyone looked at what the Japanese name their cars in their home nation?  Bluebird, etc.  The MR just might stand for

for all we know.

There is much speculation, but I bet some Toyota exec died with the knowledge...
