FR in snow, bad idea?
« on: May 31, 2005, 01:29:30 am »
hi, first time poster, long time reader.
anyway, I am going to get my own car soon, I am 25, have been driving full time since 17. moderate to good driving skills.

long story short. I live in Edmonton, which is half year cover with snow. now I am consider to lease an Ford Mustange, maybe GT. amoung other performance car at that price range.

the only thing is I am not sure about FR in snow. I live in a house so the "inner" street outside are not plow when there's snow.

I see some mustange on street in winter too. so I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on
FR in winter, was it a really bad idea ?

Thank you and have a nice day...

Welcome to the forum.

"FR"? you mean rear wheel drive?

The mustang is probably not an ideal winter car but a set of 4 really good snow tires combined with a manual transmission should work except when the snow is so deep that you ground out on it!
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Mustang should be fine, it has traction control to get you going, but you will need snow tires.

I would think the Mustang with 4 good snow tires and sensible winter driving habits should be fine. The best combo for those really tough days is AWD w 4 snows but you don't have to be that extreme for most winter days. Just drive carefully. No vehicle stops well on ice, not even AWD or 4WD.

I can't believe none of you old-timers know what "FR" means!

It means Front Engine, Rear Wheel Drive...

"I can't believe none of you old-timers know what "FR" means! "

To be fair, the only place I have come across that terminology is the Gran Turismo Series for playstation...}

I have never, in over 40 years of driving, heard of RWD being called FR; but, maybe that's just me. Learn something every day!!

Yes front engine Rear wheel drive, there's MR for Mid engine Rear drive, and RR for RoadRunner... err Rear engine rear wheel drive.

Wasn't Toyota's MR-2 named for its drivetrain layout, i.e. MidRear-2?

You mean the FR-V?  It looks okay, and with the diesel engine, it'd be a good runner.

Never heard of FR as well for the RWD type of vehicle. Must be a new term or Reggin has his names mixed up.

Now that 100tacos100bucks says it, FR and RR are used in Gran Turismo... Not sure if those terms are normally only used in Japan (where the games were made), or maybe in Europe, I don't know.

In Asia, people like to use FF, FR, MR, RR, FA, MA, RA, ... to describe a car's drive train layout. Also, the use of engine codes, tranny codes, and chassis codes to identify cars are very common. People who like to mod their cars find it is easier to communicate this way.

There is this for sale ad I saw a while back, FA EG6 moded with EG63, it tells me that it is a 92-95 Honda Civic 3 dr hatch with Mitsubishi's 2.0 Turbo engine, and the fwd is changed to awd layout, probally out of a Talon or Eclipse.

Oldsmobile doesn't "stand for" anything; it's the name of a guy who started a car company.

As for the 442, maybe baby I could ride with you, in the words of Debbie Harry.

Dude, what is your point? different culture have a diiferent way to express things. I am of Asian background, and lived and driven on that side of the pond.

4-4-2
4 barrel carb, 4 speed, 2 (dual) exhaust.

For the record, I am not a muscle car fan, I just like cars. the Olds 442 is somewhat well known.

Well said Initial as that is the model no. meaning for that car. His name was Ransom Olds and he was one of the folks who started it.
